I don't think he heard you.

Read a story yesterday where Peter Jackson was asked why they made this movie now as the rights were obtained in 2009. He said simply/ “so they don’t lose the rights.”

I will hold of seeing this one but am curious about the score.

Seems ok, nothing ground breaking.

Well, at least the orchestra doesn't sound as paper thin as it was in The Dark Tower. I heard that Conrad Pope is the conductor/orchestrator on this one and Alita: Battle Angel. Is it true? If so, good.

Holy Hellraiser sequels, Batman!

The Conrad Pope news is encouraging, though.

I saw the film yesterday. Quite disappointing, even though the premise itself is intriguing. If you're looking for any Peter Jackson trademarks here, you'll be disappointed.

I was also disappointed in the score, even though I'm a huge fan of JXL in general. Pretty standard RC-isms, too busy and loud in competition with the myriad of sound effects.

As for i listen from the samples, you can expected something big with a lot of brass and there is a certain thing about that London theme that remain me to the Valkerie Ride from Wagner

That's a deliberate reference, a sequence that sort of mirrors the helicopter scene in APOCALYPSE NOW.

From the clips and trailers I've seen, the film looks like one long, really bad video game.
It makes the gloomy looking City Of Ember look positively sparkling.
I will be avoiding this one.

  • Any new JXL is welcome to me. He's one of the best around at the moment. Do you have a link to the trailer?

He comes and goes for me. I love his contribution for Batman V Superman and his score for Mad Max Fury Road, but others... many, many others... ?

The first trailer seemed interesting until more of them arrived. Now they're just selling the one conceit, and I can't help but to feel that the film will play out the same way. It does "look" grander than most Young Adult Dystopias (TM).

For me, BRIMSTONE and DISTANCE BETWEEN DREAMS (gorgeous!) in addition to the ones you mentioned. I think he's best when he's not doing mainstream, big Hollywood things (FURY ROAD is more an auteur film than a big Hollywood thing, for example, so is Zack Snyder).

There were good bits scattered about in MORTAL ENGINES -- a very pronounced main theme, a beautiful love theme. But a lot of it is pounding RC ostinati, unfortunately. But I've only heard it in the film. I need to listen to it on album as well.

In the Making Of video, Pope is specified only as a conductor. Don't know anything about his involvement on Alita: Battle Angel, but maybe there he works also as a orchestrator.

We can certainly debate the auteur theory forever, and I kinda get why you're excluding "Fury Road" from a big Hollywood thing, but I can't agree with you about Zack Snyder, who seems about as Big Hollywood as one can possibly get.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. Perhaps 'generic Hollywood' is a better term than 'big Hollywood'. Snyder is a love/hate director, but he's certainly not generic. His extravaganzas always bear the stamp of an auteur director. BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN is certainly not his best film (although the score is fine), but it definitely bears his stamp too.

The score is a remix of "Brothers In Arms" track from Fury Road..
This guy is Uwe Boll of film music roll eyes

And the movie is even worse. What a disaster by Peter Jackson frown

To be fair, he didn't direct it. Only wrote the screenplay, based on the books. So Christian Rivers should get most of the blame here (in addition to studio executives, no doubt).

Jackson is a producer of this crap also! Together with a LOTR team - Boyens & Walsh.

OK, true. But for films like these, I tend to blame the director and/or the pressure of the 'finance' guys. No doubt Peter Jackson has SOME blame, but he's not the biggest culprit here.
