I just bought the 3 cds of his that I didn't already own from Screen Archives for 4.95 each. I mean I did this last week. ---------- My mistake......problem with search engine. They seem to have plenty of MJL albums.
From IMDB: The Passage" released in 1979, flopped during its theatrical run, but his unique score for that film led legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith to conduct a piece of Lewis's score from that film at the 70th Annual Academy Awards. Lewis's theme from "The Passage", the score of 'Appassionata', was used during the annual In Memoriam montage in which the Academy pays a very special tribute honoring motion picture and television actors that have passed away during the previous year.

Yup, and worked beautifully, too:
(the piece is not "Appassionata", but rather "Finale", though both cues are variations on the same gorgeous melody.
'4:00 onward. Music rarely gets more beautiful than this, regardless of medium. Takes my breath away every time I listen to it.'
I totally agree. This is one of the many moments that I love on his 'Film Music: First 25 Years' double album - for me, one of THE great film music collections. There's so much warmth and melody in his music. So many films could have benefitted from the feeling of uplift he can create.
Lewis also composed the music for a Broadway musical, CYRANO (1973), which has a lovely melodic score. Won star Christopher Plummer a Tony. The show only ran for 49 performances.
Originally released as 2-lp set, but later available on CD.
YES! This is one of my favorite scores for a Broadway musical (the show has a book by Anthony Burgess); it includes some of the loveliest songs ever written: the exquisite "You Have Made Me Love You", "I Never Loved You", "Autumn Carol" and the moving "Love is Not Love".
Every time I play Hounds of the Baskervilles what an amazing listen, the actual string work is top draw violins are sweet - elegant the whole orchestra together is splendid - if this was released again expanded instant purchase. I sure like Sphinx too.
Why, on the promo label CD, does the main title of THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF have the sound effects on it?
I'm guessing because it was the only source available. This was one of the last of his promos to come out. I guess somebody was searching for a decent master. The blu-ray has a nice isolated track. A proper CD release is one of my last holy grails. Love this film/score.

I saw Cyrano with Christopher Plummer at the Palace Theater way back in the early 70's. I recall it being a rainy evening with perhaps 100 people in the theater...including the huge cast. It was a preview. Mr. Plummer put on an amazing performance . Perhaps the single greatest I have ever seen in a theater. The score is lovely and the double lp was a great souvenir of the show.
To this day I wonder why this show didn't succeed. Cyrano was made into a musical some years later but I'm sure it didn't contain a score as beautiful as Mr. Lewis'.
