I've owned the set for nearly 2 months and am still working through it. I already owned three of the discs, none of which I thought as great, but generally enjoyable, being his recordings of the popular show tunes, great American songbook and a tribute to Sinatra.

I played the Aaron Copland suite for The Red Pony today and thought that was pretty good and recently the first half of his albums of themes to Spielberg films (volumes 1 and 3). I don't own or know all of the scores included in these two selections but for those I do, I can't make my mind up as to whether these performances are more enjoyable than their OST versions. Similarly, the Star Wars Trilogy.

I can't say his Bassoon concerto impressed but that needs a few more plays; Copland's Quiet City and Alan Hovhaness' Mysterious Mountain/Symphony #2 are good. So, early days for me and i readily admit that I'm not his greatest fan.

I certainly would not have paid the present asking price for this set ... but at the deal price two months ago I can't say I regret buying it ... yet.

I got myself a copy of this earlier in the month for about £35 (eBay, jolly good condition) and just finished it yesterday. Yes, I'd already got about 4 of the discs, but it was still a good deal at that price.

Does anyone know if the John Williams Greatest Hits 1969–1999 2 CD set is fully represented in this boxset? For example, the Superman theme appears in the former but not the latter even though both are Sony products? Also is Hymn to the Fallen a re-recording on the former and if so is it superior to the version in the boxset? Thanks.

Oh and is the music on the album A Tribute to John Williams - An 80th Birthday Celebration on different albums in the boxset?

I don't own that 2CD compilation release so my replies may be limited. But you appear to have answered your own question re: is that earlier release fully represented ... given you've identified Superman: The Movie (1978) as an omission from this 20CD box set ...

Whilst the earlier release is a compilation of tracks (it appears to comprise both OST and re-recordings), the box set is a compilation of the albums John Williams released as a conductor under the Sony label. As such it excludes similar albums he recorded but released under the Philips label (such as Swing, Swing, Swing (1984)).

With regard to this 2017 re-recording of Hymn to the Fallen, it runs almost 1/3 less time than the OST and, to me, sounds like a weak interpretation.

But then, I haven't come across that many of the albums in this set which grab me, finding the few I already owned to be my favourites.

I don't know the other (Tribute) album to which you refer and regret I don't have time now to research.
