For those of us whose livelihoods depend on the studios, we've watched over the last two decades as a once-competitive industry has consolidated so it is now controlled by just a few powerful media conglomerates. Further reduction of competition – especially consolidation of this magnitude – would be terrible for people in my field (and also, by the way, for the composers we admire).

Uh, isn't there a monopolies, mergers and acquisitions thingy?

They destroyed the British chocolate industry in one fell swoop. Just like that. It's one gawdawful Hershey Bar.

Hyperbole aside, I tend to agree.

I think I am right in remembering that Cadbury had a very socially responsible outlook to its organisation with purpose-built housing for its workforce? I don't know what the death knell was for that.

But I think the prescient response was the one about seeing and listening to a corporate vision and sound when it came to film and music as opposed to a more varied and creative landscape when you have more independent production companies?

I'm with the posters who think Disney is too big and powerful already. The number of franchises Disney controls now is stunning.

And who wants to see every last thing through the same corporate lens, the same set of policies and preferences, the same CEO's agenda? The merger would put too much power in one C-suite.

Yes, that would be my worry as well.

Trouble is, it is a bit like convergent evolution, where the commercial pressures are the dominant environment and the producers of the 'product' bend the knee to cater to those pressures to such an extent that you end up with, as one commentator metaphorically said, one godawful Hershy Bar'.

Disney buys everything these days. Monopoly soon?

Big fan of the Mouse Company, but I'm also nervous about some consequences. For example, I dread what becomes of the ALIEN films if Disney takes over. Hopefully, Ridley will get his last film out before everything is censored to pieces!

After the last two disappointments, i'd prefer he didn't. I know you love them Thor, but there's too much stupidity in both.

And what happened to Shaw and Walter in Covenant really annoyed me.

Yeah, I'm aware I'm in the minority in most of the online forums I frequent on this particular issue. But thankfully -- among my own film critic colleagues -- both films are very well appreciated.

In either case -- regardless of what you think of the two movies -- I think one would agree that a Disney-fication of the ALIEN universe it not good for anyone.

They're known for their fan pleasing of late. Could bring Ripley back.

Of course, no matter what "original" versions of the films they release, there will be some controversy, as there was already a fair bit of tinkering on various home video releases and even cinema reissues before the Special Editions, so which "original" version do people want? And do they really want things like big matte lines, see-through Snowspeeder cockpits and the original terrible Landspeeder effects restored exactly as they were originally seen? Do people want the 35mm or the subtly different 70mm version of Empire (which had different dialogue, sound effects and optical wipes)? The original original sound mix for Star Wars, or the 1985 mix by Ben Burtt that most people of a certain generation are possibly used to from their VHS tapes and Laserdiscs?
Personally, I think they should do a restoration in the spirit of the originals, but with some of the cleaned-up polishes like improved matte lines etc retained. However, the ideal would be a mega-box similar to the Blade Runner 5 discs set with ALL of the different versions included. So, what, at least 8 versions of Star Wars, 6 versions of Empire and 5 of Jedi? Maybe more?

Yes, it would be tricky. I'm perfectly fine with STAR WARS being released with the updated special effects (for the most part), and I'm not even die hard about stuff like Janba being at Mos Eisely STAR WARS 1 already (since that was a scene originally planned, filmed, and scraped for no longer existing budgetary reasons). What I dislike is useless stuff like extra rocks, or the EXCESSIVE use of CGI (not the use of CGI per se) in some scenes, but I could even live with that. The WORST changes though are the ones that not only actually affect characters and storytelling but are completely nonsensical. Like Greedo shooting at Han at point blank range and missing, Darth Vader screaming "NOOOOOO!" (WTF???).

Well I'm happy - will happily wait for Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, the uncut 4k remasters of the original Star Wars Trilogy, and maybe even some Marvel cartoon scores on CD.

Disney already has a ton of Marvel Productions cartoons under their control. From the 80s alone:

Spider-Man (1981)
Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends (1981)
The Incredible Hulk (1982)
Meatballs and Spaghetti (1982)
Pandamonium (1982)
Dungeons and Dragons (1983)
Muppet Babies (1984)
Pink Panther and Sons (1984)
Little Muppet Monsters (1985)
Defenders of the Earth (1986)
Little Wizards (1987)
Dino-Riders (1988)
Robocop (1988)
Rude Dog and the Dweebs (1989)

So I would't expect Intrada to suddenly rush out an X-Men/Fantasic Four cartoon score CD! I fear we will be waiting a very long time. You'll just have to settle for an Infinity War post-credits sequence with Hugh Jackman.

You blew the rent money on that threadbare slogan, am I right?

Fox is a tabloid, same as the rest. No, really....

From Deadline.com:

"The deal doesn’t include Fox News, the broadcast network or local stations, or the studio’s the 50-plus acre lot in Los Angeles. Insiders expect the remaining Fox assets to eventually merge with News Corp., whose holdings include the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and The Times of London. Though that combination won’t occur immediately."

I hope the lot survives, and that the scoring stage does too.

As I've said before, this is awful news. There’s nothing to celebrate about two mega media companies merging… especially when Disney, the Unicron of media companies, is the one doing the buying.

All we need is another school shooting before Xmas and we can end the year on a high note. *sarcasm* This is sickening...

Well if this means that only Intrada can release Fox scores then this is bad news. Intrada have already said their wish list with Disney is full and no5 to expect scores like Armageddon etc. If we have to rely on just Intrada for all fox scores in future, there’s going to be a lot fewer expansions coming.

On another note this is bad for films with onecompany in charge of such a large percentage of the market.

If Disney does nothing but cancel the Fox Cinema Archive MOD DVD program, it will be doing a service to mankind.
