I found this film to be not as terrible as I imagined it would be. Once you come to terms with the fact it is NOT the Dark Tower of the books, other than the basic premise and some of the characters, it is a average>above average fantasy adventure tale. Elba is decent enough as Roland, given the time and material he has to work with. McConaughey fares better as the Man in Black, but then the villain roles are always much more interesting and fun. The kid playing Jake is also quite good. If you're into the books, prepare to see huge changes, different start points and material from much later in the series introduced and combined to try and simplify the worlds and set-ups. There's nothing spectacular about the whole thing though, something the books had in spades. It's a fast-paced zip through the DT universe, but it's hard to see who it will appeal to. Fans of the books will be angry at the changes and disorder/simplification of the adventure, while newcomers will wonder what's going on at times and not see anything unique enough to warrant any further investment in the drama. While the music may be the best thing Junkie has ever produced, it's still a universe away from the kind of emotional and thrilling scoring that is needed to help invest in the characters and knit the worlds together. One can only dream of what a composer with some serious dramatic chops and compositional wizardry* could have brought to this (stillborn?) adventure. *I've been playing the hell out of the two MONKEY KING scores by Chris Young this week and boy, would THAT type of skill and architecture have been welcome, applied to this universe.

My goodness, man! What level of awful were you anticipating that the film exceeded your expectations?? I can't imagine a universe in which The Dark Tower qualifies as "above average." This film was as insipid and as generic as they come. The very definition of "average" with a heaping dash of "falling well short." Like you say, I can't imagine who this would possibly appeal to. Maybe kids with strong attention spans who don't mind waiting an hour for the final twenty minutes of brainless shooting. But then, they can cut to the chase at home with Xbox, can't they?
