In films and television...a character's in some kind of game when they end up scoring a goal...but in their own team's net...and it counts as a win for the opposition. As recent a project as RIO 2 employed this trope.

Please someone tell me that this bullshit isn't rooted in real life.

All-time funniest version of this cliché was in The Odd Life Of Timothy Green...was laughing for a solid MINUTE afterwards.

And it was not supposed to be funny.

...characters in a post-apocalyptic scenario never change their clothes? On last week's Walking Dead, the characters go to a food bank so they can clear out the zombies inside and get some much-needed canned goods...but completely ignore the racks of perfectly good clothes that are EVERYWHERE in the shot. These characters seem to have been wearing the same tattered, stinky, blood-stained clothing since the show began (and it has to have been nearly two years since the zombie plague began), and yet they never think to pick up some new clothes in whatever town they pass through. I realize these outfits are basically the "uniforms" of the various characters, much like how an 80's TV cartoon would have the characters wear the same outfit in every single episode so the animators wouldn't have to design and draw new outfits, but come ON...the clothes are right there! I'd be changing my clothes CONSTANTLY seeing as they were now free and plentiful, and how whatever I was wearing would quickly get dirty and torn and coated in zombie guts.

Also in The Walking Dead, there's no dentists or doctors, yet the group seem to punch each other in the mouth an awful lot. It's a great show, but to say it's a bit of a downer is an understatement.

An actor is playing a drug addict or alchoholic but when he takes off his shirt he has a toned body and washboard abs!

I don't expect them to do a Robert Deniro/Christian Bale and gain (or lose) 50 pounds.
But, is their vanity so great they can't even eat a big meal and let their stomach go a bit?
Val Kilmer did the latter for THE DOORS and it worked fine.

Some examples of great looking drunks:

CALIFORNICATION - Duchovny
STONED - the guy who played Brian Jones
MAD MEN - Jon Hamm always looks good no matter how much he drinks!

This is where UK actors come into their own, they take their shirt off & it's usually a six-pack free zone. On the TV series House MD, other cast members stripped off & it was like Mr. Universe, but when Hugh Laurie got his kit off, there was this white lardy body.

When characters don't do what's necessary in the situation...

On a Walking Dead episode recently, a cannibal took a baby hostage and threatened to kill the kid unless the big burly "good guy" dropped his weapons and stepped outside the cabin to face a horde of z-walkers.

So , the big burly "good guy" dropped his weapons and left the cabin.

WHAT!?!

Now, here's what should have happened...

The big burly "good guy" says "Go ahead, kill the kid. Then what are you gonna do? I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I going to bop you on the head with this solid hickory wood club, then I'm gonna chop your feet and hands off with this rusty ax and finally, I'm gonna roll you out the door for the z's to chomp down on."

A long pause while the cannibal considers his options.

The cannibal replies, "uh, uh wait now... that's not in the script."

The hero goes to talk to an important character. The important character is sitting on a chair, facing away. The hero puts his hand on the important character's shoulder. The important character is revealed to be dead, slumping forward.

Probably mentioned already but just saw this again. In Gotham, Gordon gets shot in the leg and abdomen. Just hours after the bullets are removed he's moving around and shooting weapons like he never got shot. Worse yet after all the action was over they show him walk into his apartment with a slight limb again!

If you wanted to be able to talk again a few hours after getting shot on "The streets of San Francisco" best place to get hit was in the chest area, preferably the heart.

THey couldn't stand each other and would and did beat each other almost into hospital but ended up buddies who trusted each other with the life they wanted to end a short time before. Case in point "L.A. confidential" (severely overrated anyway).

A windmill turns when the wind isn't blowing at all and it seems to serve no purpose whatsoever (Frankenstein).

...potions and antidotes start working immediately, no matter how long the afflicted character was sick/poisoned. Just stick the needle in or gulp down the drink, and you're good to go! And there are never any lingering side effects.

...all a character has to do is duck under the surface of the water getting raked by machine gun fire, and they won't get hit by a stray bullet?

Didn't you see the episode of "MythBusters" where a couple feet of water pretty much DOES protect you from bullets? Even .50 cal.

Seen again in the movie "Fury" where tank commander Brad Pitt takes off his shirt to reveal extensive burn scars on his back, but is otherwise totally ripped.

... weapons clearly cataclysmically wreck whatever they strike... ... ... unless its the protagonist. Then, all of a sudden, the previously established physics of lethality go out the window. Totally different. Yet not. (24 Live Another Day)

...villains possess generically enhanced capacities, because the writers aren`t imaginative enough to actually *design* cool stuff... (Iron Man 3)...

... otherwise neat enemy/ally designs (and/or previously ultra-professionally murderous thugs) suddenly lose all such traits and become nothing more than cannon/swordfodder for the protagonists... (Iron Man 2. And 3)

... serialized excellent television wastes time recapping the previous episodes...

... characters pull some grandiose conclusive theory out of the ether, totally UNBIDDEN by onscreen events... (Godzilla)
