I don't like cushions, I don't care for throws
If it's fripperies you're pushin' then I don't do those
I don't like pictures hanging on the wall
And much less scriptures - never got that call

I don't like stuff to hang above the bed
There are better things enough for that room instead
I don't think ornaments look good when shelfed
I'd gladly dispense with the Wedgwood and the Delft

Clutter is criminal
I like it minimal

And don't even mention commemorative plates
They only lead to tension and negative traits
"Charles and Di" or "Thomas Kinkade"
You can phone a guy, he can have them trade.

I don't like rugs and I don't like a mat
They encourage bugs, and we can't have that.
So I don't like cushions, let me just repeat,
Just a big TV and a comfy seat.

All that's allowed on the new settee
Are me and the cats.

(And Mrs TG)

TG, you must NOT be an interior decorator. smile Glad you let Mrs. TG on the settee.

It is a big trend now to put lots of throw pillows on beds, and I've heard that men don't care for that trend. I'm not crazy about that trend either.

That is a very fun poem with an awesome rhyme scheme. Bravo.

Thanks Joan and Bill. No, I’m not an interior decorator although I’m cursed with an ability to hang wallpaper but a hatred of doing it.

Funny, Bill!

"Smart" is a good adjective for me, Bill.

FIRST GLASSES AND LATER

At forty I lost near vision,
stilt arms’ extension
insufficient to decipher precious
words from gray smudges.
Desperate to see the world again
in only black and white, I submitted
to glasses and bent elbows.

In later decades my mind had this
absurdly named far-sightedness,
imagination rather blinded to
the failures in decisive decades.

The future focuses on graying of
pallor and hair, glacial blood,
the heart’s angina,
all brailles of this body.
No enlarging lens will clarify
the lost sharp strut of my
stride as I, once verdant
will soon embrace the
foggy faith of vespers' vision.

See, I can't do this. It's profound, serious and great poetry in my humble opinion, whereas mine ends up as doggerel and usually comes when an absurd thought meets a single rhyming couplet.

Tall Guy, your poems are great. I can't do your serious or light rhyming poems. Thanks for the compliment. We each "do our own thing" here.

Looking at old photographs I realise
The camera sometimes lies
I swear I see intelligence in your eyes

The Mosquito

Last night while I lay a-sleeping
Came a tiny buzz a-creeping,
And it made me sit bolt upright in my bed.

‘Twas a little bitty insect
With a grim, bloodthirsty mindset;
And she filled my sleep-dulled mind quite full of dread.

For to thrash around and swat her,
I might hit my wife, or start her;
Yet I couldn’t stand the thought of being bled!

Turn the light on? God forbid it!
I would have to just outwit it.
She would not use me to have her belly fed!

Yet again her wings a-singing
Cause my eardrum to be ringing;
I must find a way to make this bug be dead!

In the blackness I lay waiting,
For the pest, anticipating;
Just the moment when she lands upon my head.

Easy does it, she’s a-coming!
I can hear her wings a-drumming!
With a mighty “WHACK!” the little vampire’s dead!

“WHAT THE HECK?!”, my wife’s remarking.
And our little dog’s a-barking;
Now I guess I’ll need some kind of sleeping med!

smile

I have photos of some ex friends, so Jejannum's poem is perfect and well-rhymed. (Yep, and cutting.)

Jackfu, I hate mosquitos. Flies also drive me nuts in the house. I walk around with a fly swatter.
That is a cute poem with a very interesting, extended rhyme scheme which I couldn't come up with, so congratulations.

Maybe we should all self-publish these FSM poems. wink

TG, here is the problem with self-publishing our poems.

Our resident poetry president, Bill Carson, contributed poems like the following:

"Show me a home
where the buffalo roam...
And i will show you a house with a lot of shit on the carpet!"

Do we keep his poems in the book or censor the book? As you know, Bill is a very sensitive guy.

(Maybe we should keep his poems for levity.smile)

Thanks, Joan! smile

Here's another "song", if you will, to the tune of "Good Vibrations". It was slightly tricky in that I don't know how to write down overlapping vocal harmonies like the Beach Boys sang in "Good Vibrations" (Wilson, Love). This was inspired by a couple of instances in which I thought my cellphone was vibrating in my pocket but I didn't even have it with me. It's actually a thing; Phantom Vibration Syndrome.

Phone Vibrations

Ah! There goes my gosh-darned cellphone again!
I can’t quickly enough get it in my hand.
I silenced it quite a while ago;
But to my surprise there was no call, and so…

I’m feeling phantom vibrations,
It’s giving me those sensations;
No calls but I’ve got vibrations, (ooh, no, no)
It’s giving phantom vibrations; (ooh, no, no)
I’m feeling phantom sensations, (ooh, no, no)
It’s giving me those sensations; (ooh, no, no)
I’m feeling phantom vibrations.

D*mn this thing! I set it up so that it would not ring.
There it goes; it’s doin’ it again!
Wha?!? What the devil is goin’ on?!?
Has this darned thing got a mind all of its own?

I’m gettin’ phantom vibrations,
It’s giving me those sensations;
I’m feeling phantom vibrations, (ooh, no, no)
It’s giving me those vibrations; (ooh, no, no)
No calls but I’ve got vibrations, (ooh, no, no)
It’s giving me those sensations; (ooh, no, no)
I’m gettin’ phantom vibrations.

Ah, ah, my, my, phone gyrations!
I don’t know how it can do it now!
Oh, my, my, phone gyrations!
Oh, my, my, those sensations!

Gotta stop those creepy, darn phantom vibrations happenin’!
Gotta stop those creepy, darn phantom sensations happenin’!
Gotta stop those creepy, darn phantom vibrations happenin’!

Waaaaaahhhhhh!

Phone, phone, phone, phone vibrations! (ooh, no, no)
Phone, phone, phone, phone vibrations! (ooh, no, no)

Yep, Jackfu, I sang Good Vibrations with your words. Worked. Fun!
