Episode 14 - Gunsmoke - Doc Judge & The Blacksmith & The Wake

Howdy folks! We’re saddling up and riding into Dodge City for an exploration of the long-running TV western Gunsmoke. Your humble hosts Jens, Yavar, and Clark take a look at three episodes from 1960, each highlighted by its own distinctive Goldsmith score. First up is “Doc Judge,” featuring a suspenseful score anchored by an ominous five-note theme. Next, we meet “The Blacksmith,” containing a lively, diverse score offering warmth, romance, suspense, and a bit of action. Last but not least is “The Wake,” which serves up a modest, playful score built around an instantly memorable main theme. Grab your six-shooter, dust off your ten-gallon hat, and join us as we cantor through one of the staples of classic television.

I just finished the Slatkin episode and Yavar, I have to say I was really impressed with your work! You led the interview with purpose but didn't get in the way of either Slatkin or the conversation. No easy feat. I've listened to many composer interviews over the years because they tend to be happy to talk about their work and gracious with their time, but the downside is they often end up talking with folks who mean well but lack basic interview skills. The Slatkin episode has me very excited for the Eidelman interview and future interviews to come!
While I'm heaping praise let me also add that this podcast continues to be impeccably produced. Great editing, pacing, judicious but substantial and smartly curated musical interludes. I think Jerry would've liked this a lot.

I'm going to add that the quality of the music, the sound quality, I mean, is pretty great here.
With so many of these early episodes, the guys are going to be at the mercy of whatever recordings exist, so we've heard old time radio extractions, clips taken out of the films themselves - basically what a CD producer would rightly label as 'archival' to prepare the listener. Event the stuff pulled from the Twilight Zone isolated tracks was so-so, despite being (95%) separated from the dialogue and effects. It's still currently the only way to hear those so often used pieces of Goldsmithery, and therefore well worth a listen, but these Gunsmoke tracks are in GREAT shape! It's part of the pleasure of this episode that the music is so easy to enjoy because it's so rich and clear.

Thanks Rnselson and Mike S for the very kind words about my interview. I hope you and others enjoy our Gunsmoke episode. I want to supplement what David wrote and say that this latest episode would not have been possible to present with music-only cues, without Ron Burbella. Well, we did later find another source for the CBS EZ Cue LP transfers, so we could have presented The Wake (and later on when we get to 1961, Old Faces) as music only...but the other Gunsmoke scores we got from him as reel-to-reel tape transfers, which got edited and labeled by David himself (using all of the cue titles we could find in Bill Wrobel's CBS documentation), along with Jens. I thanked them when we recorded but Jens is too humble to leave that stuff in. But it was a group effort and it turned out beautifully.

Wow, thanks lacoq! Just a humble request/suggestion to you and Mike S and everyone else who's posted such nice things in this thread (or thought about doing so) -- if you are willing to just copy and paste (the majority of) what you wrote into an iTunes review, it would really help us out! We do all we can to get the word out on the boards and social media, but anything that also helps us climb the iTunes rankings is very helpful in catching new eyes that wouldn't notice us otherwise...

Chartable is a third party aggregator - of course it’s going to take longer for the review to show up.
Right. I just like the formatting so much better than on the iTunes page (which I thought I checked too, at the time...but unlike Chartable they don't seem to order reviews chronologically on their main page).
I enjoyed the Gunsmoke podcast. (A bit long for this senior citizen.) I liked the music and comments. Also, you can hear elements in his western music in Gunsmoke that will be further developed in his western music for movies.
So glad to see you chime in, Joan. As one of my favorite people on the board for years, I'm always waited with baited breath to see what you're going to think of something, I'll be honest. Was getting a little worried since we hadn't heard from you since The Twilight Zone. Did you try out the Slatkin interview?
You'll be glad to know that this should be our longest episode for the foreseeable future. We were trying our best to keep these under 2 hours, but in this case it just didn't seem to make sense to have a podcast discussing a single Gunsmoke episode on its own. Jerry did three in 1960, two in 1961, and one (twice the length of the others, with a much more substantial score) in 1966. Now ideally since our first Gunsmoke podcast had to have our intro comments about the series and such (even though we tried to keep that brief), we would've done the three episodes second, but we wanted to remain chronological and cover all the 1960 ones together if possible.
The only other time, looking ahead, that we might have tackled three episodes at once was Jerry's three 1961 episodes of The Twilight Zone, but we just knew that wouldn't be possible looking at how long our TZ podcasts have been so far, so we're splitting his most important of all, The Invaders, off into its own show (hopefully with a special guest).

Yavar, I don't always comment on each podcast, and I was out of town for over 3 weeks. I think I've only missed one podcast and will return to it when I have time. I had to jump into Gunsmoke because I'm a western music lover.
That makes total sense (and you know I'm right there with you on westerns); I just missed hearing from you. Glad you chimed in!
