I think this could have worked as a legitimate feature with Bergman at the helm, given someone gave the green light on THE FRESHMAN.

That's what I thought the movie was about when I first heard about it. 
Interesting that you should mention it.
About 12 or so years ago, someone sent me a purported copy of an INDY 4 script written by (supposedly) Jeffrey Boam. It had and older INDY, circa 1950, going after "Noah's Ark" for some obscure satanic artifact that may be contained inside. It was such an off-the-beat script that I thought: this is either a fake fanboy recreation or an early first draft of something. Either way, there were elements that I liked and others that completely sucked and went against the spirit of the previous movies.
It's going to be hard to try and do a post world war II Indy movie and capture the spirit of the old 1930's serials. By that time, the world had changed dramatically. I'm not sure I want to see a "cold war" revisionist Indiana Jones, much like I squirmed at a post World War 2 Jake Gittes in THE TWO JAKES.
