HAWAII FIVE-O 2000 (1999)
Michael Mann's stylized direction of the Richard LaGravenese script sports veteran detective Steve McGarrett (Jeff Fahey) and competent team (Val Kilmer, Mark Wahlberg, Mykeleti Williamson, Wes Studi) as they unravel the identity of Wo-Fat (Chow Yun Fat) and his plot to contaminate the water supply in the western hemisphere. Michelle Yeoh, Bruce McGill, Wings Hauser, Giovani Ribisi, Bernard Hill, Kate Nelligan)

Amazing!

I always thought Jeff Fahey would be an excellent choice for Steve McGarrett in a remake myself. wink

Great fun thread Max.

Thanks, ANZ, this is quite fun. Imagine my reaction when I pulled the title MADCOW AND MRS. YIP (1978) from out of my ass.

I especially love "YOUR GRAVE OR MINE".

The Richie Hebner story.

(I'll bet ol' Richie would never have imagined himself being played on the screen by of all people Bruce Willis!) big grin

I think this could have worked as a legitimate feature with Bergman at the helm, given someone gave the green light on THE FRESHMAN.

Interesting that you should mention it.

About 12 or so years ago, someone sent me a purported copy of an INDY 4 script written by (supposedly) Jeffrey Boam. It had and older INDY, circa 1950, going after "Noah's Ark" for some obscure satanic artifact that may be contained inside. It was such an off-the-beat script that I thought: this is either a fake fanboy recreation or an early first draft of something. Either way, there were elements that I liked and others that completely sucked and went against the spirit of the previous movies.

It's going to be hard to try and do a post world war II Indy movie and capture the spirit of the old 1930's serials. By that time, the world had changed dramatically. I'm not sure I want to see a "cold war" revisionist Indiana Jones, much like I squirmed at a post World War 2 Jake Gittes in THE TWO JAKES.

On the other hand, I'd be very open to it, and I bow to no one in my love for the character. I think one could do other, very different kinds of movies about Indiana Jones that would still work well, in much the same way individual movies and episodes of Star Trek can have very different tones while still remaining Star Trek. I've long thought it would be wonderful to have another Indy movie be a departure from the Saturday afternoon matinee serial style of the first three, and be perhaps a straight drama in an adventure milieu, rather than the sort of action-oriented escapist fantasy they've been (not that I don't love those, of course). The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles diverges significantly from the tone of the features, but (IMHO) adds immeasurably to the mythology and fleshes out the character and his history very compellingly. I'd like to see more exploration like that (though a few thrills will still be welcome wink ).

(Mind you, with all due respect to the great Alec Guinness, I'd also love to see the Star Wars saga with Toshirô Mifune as Obi-Wan Kenobi...)
