I can't believe that I never posted to this thread! This is my favorite FSM release! For 3 decades, I hoped that someday I would be able to listen to this(Winter Kill) score whenever I wanted. And the bonus.. I finally was able to hear Hawkins and Babe!! I NOW know WHY Goldsmith won an Emmy for this score; I can't listen to the final track without sobbing uncontrollaby. Goldsmith kicked every composer's ass back then!
Hey, I've long touted Winter Kills main title is a great one, so include me, too.
I also like Hawkins as well as the Fielding material from Hawkins included as a bonus on the ZigZag disc.
I figure if we're talkin' Seventies, you're "automatic"!
I was surprised at how much I liked Winter Kill, but Goldsmith always excelled at the "sneaky suspense cue", so really no surprise after all. Great stuff.
I agree! That main title hit me like the proverbial ton o' bricks back when I heard it for the first time when the movie originally aired! And, yes... Goldsmith ALWAYS kicked other composer's asses!
NP- Dawn of the Midnight Rain(Goldsmith - 1967 version)

Yes,
It's ALWAYS nice to see that these Goldsmith tv scores were not "Cast Away" and forgotten.

I appreciate the fact that Goldsmith was not too "big" to return to television scoring, even if he wasn't getting the movie projects(!), which I find hard to believe.
So cool to see this thread revived! I'm another big fan of this CD - BABE is one of those marvellously rich yet simple scores that had a theme that I was able to figure out on the piano when I was a teenager. I even remember performing the main theme at a wedding of a friend of mine after much coersing - seemed to work beautifully in that setting!
Jerry's score for WINTER KILL adds such an amazing creep factor to the film because of the unusual use of tablas and electronics - I still get creeped out everytime I hear some of that music. Would LOVE to see this one released on DVD to get the full effect!

I've always found it interesting that Goldsmith was rewarded by his peers in the tv industry more than those in the motion picture industry- 5 Emmys as opposed to 1 Oscar.

There's a lot to like about this score. The Main Title is similar to "Take a Hard Ride" and the menacing piano in "Late Arrival/What's in a Name/I'm Worried/A New Killer" reminds me of The Sand Pebbles cue "Coolies Jump Ship."
