Don't listen to this guy for 60's stuff. Apes and the Flint scores are all you really need from that 60's list. Seconds has that great MT, but you'll never ever listen to it again.

OK, thanks for setting me straight. I'll donate the others to a thrift store.

Your taste is just different than most! Some of those titles from the 1960s are just not the ones I'd ever suggest to someone just starting to get into Goldsmith.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this one yet...

THE SECRET OF NIMH

Fantastic, beautiful, rich, complex, accessible score.

Beyond that, he has gobs of other fantastic scores, with incredible diversity. Here is a "grab bag" assortment that I think generally appeal to "newer" Goldsmith listeners:

Chinatown
First Knight
Basic Instinct
Night Crossing
Islands in the Stream
The Blue Max
The Great Train Robbery

Of course tastes differ, and not every Goldsmith score is for every listener. I adore the man's music overall, but there are still many of his scores that I don't like nearly as much as other folks do.

Please let us know what you go for next (and what you think of it).

Damn, I wish I'd gotten your response in time. I already took them to the thrift store.

Don't worry, whoever buys them from the thrift store is sure to bring them back in no time!

The 60's stuff belongs in the sixties. The 70's, 80's and 90's stuff are timeless.

This! Arguably his greatest score. Maybe a tie with ST:TMP.

Get ALL Of them... EXCEPT Sebastian and Lillies of the Field! big grinbig grinbig grin

And the absolute worst -Ballad of Cable Hogue-unlistenable.

Funny, those are three of my favorites. Oh, well....
And I would follow Joan's advise: listen to him on youtube. There is a tremendous selection there.

I absolutely agree! Sebastian, Lillies of the Field, and The Ballad of Cable Hogue are three of my top favourites too! Essential Goldsmith titles in my opinion.

W. David Lichty, your post is the winner so far. Great suggestions for scores closer to what Losher already knows and loves. Since Goldsmith is so eclectic, I agree that's a great way to start. And Joan, great suggestion about sampling through YouTube.

I don't have much else to suggest...except Capricorn One! Still one of my favorites forty years on. But it's muy 70's, so you have to go for that sound to enjoy.

I found out years ago when I was first discovering Goldsmith's library that you will not find one definite answer to this. Goldsmith is a favorite and one of the best and he has so much different kinds of sounds that you can take recommendations and hear so many opinions that it is overwhelming. Each listener has their own Goldsmith genre. Mine is the sci-fi/horror Goldsmith. I love Alien, Star Trek, Mummy, Poltergeist, Powder, Psycho 2, etc. I owned a bunch and traded a bunch. You have to really listen and narrow down to what sets your mood. My least favorites were his comedy stuff and a lot of the 80s synth. Good Luck, you can't go wrong with what you like.

losher, good luck - these things are always difficult because mostly we end up telling you what WE like, often completely disregarding what you have mentioned that YOU like so far. I looked at your profile, and I also see that you're talking about music as experienced "outside the film" (unless I'm misinterpreting that). So yes, what can I add to what others have said? Not much, but the suggestions about working backwards from the time period of the scores you enjoy, and particularly the YouTube exploration, are good ones.

Still, it's a little bit like saying, "I heard some jazz on the radio last night. Can you recommend some more"? Well, it's not as exaggerated as that, but it's a bit like it. Good luck again. Do let us know how you get on.

    YES!!!

I found my own answer to this question with a terrific source: YAVAR! He really helped me get deeper into JG's music, and of course the Odyssey itself is a tremendous, fun-as-heck-to-listen-to resource.

My three favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores are Star Trek V, The Edge, and Innerspace, not particularly in that order. And this year, I’ve listened to the expanded Powder several times, so maybe it’s a top four...So my question is, given the four aforementioned scores, which are the next ones my esteemed colleagues out there recommend I acquire quickly, and/or not pass up?

i found jeff bond's exhaustive, multi-part listener's guide in FSM in the early 00s very helpful when i started to dig deeper into goldsmith. the man just wrote SO MUCH MUSIC.

Part 1: "The Sleek, Spare and Streamlined '90s..." (FSM Vol 4 # 2)

    Part 2: "Recording the Reagan-Bush Years" (FSM Vol 4 # 3)

Part 3: "Super Hits of the Late '70s" (FSM Vol 4 # 4)
    http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/fsmonline/issue_detail_print.cfm?issID=31

Part 4: "Shafted in the Watergate Era" (FSM Vol 4 # 6)

Part 5: "Swinging in the Late '60s, Baby" (FSM Vol 4 # 8)

Part 6: "In the Beginning..." (FSM Vol 5 # 5)

Part 7: Final Roundup of post-1999 releases in FSM Vol 9 # 8)

Also, the commemorative issue following his death (Vol 9 # 7):
    http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/fsmonline/issue_detail_print.cfm?issID=103

my favorite scores for repeat listening:

    poltergeist
    star trek: the motion picture
    total recall
    alien
    chinatown
    planet of the apes
    the final conflict
    star trek v
    coma
    the mephisto waltz
    psycho ii
    boys from brazil
    the great train robbery
    small soldiers
    airforce one

for what it's worth, i put together everything available on spotify in a chronological-ish playlist (unfortunately they only have like 35% of his work, but it's still 60 hours of goldsmith to take for a spin): https://open.spotify.com/user/124591654/playlist/0CQjNmSNEUn3MJs33VoV6h?si=d3Pk5YCnT7GXaHxVgw_hAA

The above is so great, thanks for the resources!

My favorites are Boys From Brazil Capricorn One, Planet of the Apes, Lonely are the Brave, the Blue Max, and Omen: Final Conflict. Special mention has to go to some of the Dr Kildare music...terrific stuff there imo.
