That James went ahead and recorded it despite the LLL release shows how esteemed The Blue Max is in his own eyes. I even harbor a notion Previn admires it for the grand Teuton it actually is. I do wonder what Mike did to rekindle the original score, but I've resisted all temptation to tear the wrapper off the jewel case. I wish I had your problem lol! I'd love to get my hands on that sucker I found a LLL for under 20 bucks...so, the complete score or the Tadlow. Ugh, this is tough!

I have enough for a like new version of the La La Land (runs about 23 US)...but the Tadlow I can get for seven US dollars less. This is a tough decision for me after this thread. That's another reason I'd say go with the Tadlow. Enjoy the modern performance and recording, and bunches of material from other Goldsmith scores. Then, if you really, really like Blue Max, get a used copy of LLL's. You win either way, so don't sweat it. Okay...TADLOW (for now ).

Happy collecting! Oh the La La Land is inevitable my friend. I mean, geez, I have BOTH boxes of Greatest Story ever Told, ALL cd releases of Vertigo (and working on all the Ben Hur), plus three Conan the Barbarians lol! I'm a collector, alright!

It's interesting to follow WagAl's semi-initiation into the vast world of film music, coming in from "the other end" as it were - for example being aware of Andre Previn's concert works, but not his relationship to film scores. Aren't we the geeky ones? Whatever, there's never a wrong time to (re)post other people's interpretations of THE BLUE MAX. I can never manage to embed YT clips (my excuse is that I don't want to - it slows down the page-loading time), so here it is in the old-fashioned way. At least I hope it is - half the time I can't even do that. Geek me, and nutmeg into the bargain. Maybe I'm just used to the other versions, especially the OST, but Previn (and/or the Pittsburgh Ork) doesn't quite do it for me here. I don't know if it's too ponderous or something. Any opinions? ANDRE PREVIN CONDUCTS THE BLUE MAX ------------------------------------------------ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLQA1-S4gGk I'm not sure whether my opinion is valid at all on this, as I've only heard bits from the original soundtrack recording (Tadlow is on the way). But I found the video great to listen to on the morning after Christmas.

I've seen that clip before, which explains my reference to Previn. I think it is quite faithful to the piece - it appears to be played a tad slower than I'm used to, but then again, it was a televised live performance. Probably played at 'natural' speed. The entry to The Attack was missing from this rendering. That rousing brass ensemble which, in the film, has the British and German squadrons racing towards each other with the brass statement repeated. The film edit is mostly the double brass statement, and the music in the clip is actually tagged on severely abbreviated, but makes a good concert piece. In fact, during my first Goldsmith Barbican concert in 1987, I heard that very same piece live when the London Philharmonia played it and I'm pretty sure it was titled 'Battle' then - sure put a smile on my face. What gets me is the Previn version in the clip is the same as the original Citadel LP track titled 'Battle.' I think those confused and confusing track names were explained on the board at some point, but I can't remember where. Could it be that Goldsmith used it as a concert piece a good many times, and to distinguish it from the 'Attack' form from the film, instead referred to it as 'Battle' in the concert going version?
