I second your wish to get a stand alone Superman: The Movie (John Williams). I also own the Rhino CD. The track "The Planet Krypton" is wonderful. Indeed it is. I'm also quite fond of "The Fortress of Solitude" cue; imo it's among Williams' finest works. In fact, as great as the action stuff is, I find myself listening to the majestic Krypton cues and warm, heartfelt Americana music of Clark Kent's Smallville years. Didn't the actor playing young Clark later have a role in the second Amityville Horror film--the one with Burt Young? I'm not sure. Ah, but I digress. The Blue Box is more than I wish to have--I've never even seen the 1988 Superman cartoon. I merely wish to own an affordable, updated, and best-possible-sounding release of Superman: the Movie. Have to agree here. When I bought the original vinyl double album back in the day, the first side of the first record got way more play than the rest. Of course it plays to more visual stuff with less dialogue, and is the more serious part of the film which gets the better and more satisfyingly dramatic treatment.

I totally understand people wanting a standalone release of this iconic score. I adore the Blue Box but I rarely (VERY rarely) listen to anything outside of the first film. (I understand IV has its fans. I'm not one of them.) So it's a pricey proposition for a single score. (Thank heavens I didn't have kids yet.) That said, I cannot imagine anything getting me to buy Superman again. I own it four times on CD (including the re-recording - which I should revisit). And the Blue Box is amazing. So I think I'm done. Star Wars on the other hand...

I seem to recall reading the digital transfer used for the Blue Box was actually quite old, with the 6-track units being transferred to digital in 2000. That’s nearly 18 years ago! (I apologise if I have mis-remembered this however!). I’m sure it would benefit from a fresh state of the art transfer judging by the incredible sound achieved on other recent archival Williams releases. But the Blue Box has audiophile sound quality. Literally nobody has ever complained about it. If the first score gets a stand-alone release, they could just use the Blue Box as its master. The 6-track source (an earlier-generation tape than what the Rhino came from) was probably re-transferred for the Blue Box well after 2001 but before 2007, from what I can deduce. But in any case, when it came to making analog-to-digital transfers, even the year 2000 was not a primitive time. They knew how to capture the full sound a tape had to offer. The 1998 John Debney/Royal Scottish National Orchestra set (Varese, 2-CD) was recorded in 20-bit digital and it's still worth referring to. Different sonics, different miking, some tempos vary, but still a close homage to the OST and very enjoyable. Running length of 82 minutes. If the Rhino isn't coming your way and you can't afford the Blue Box, you could do a lot worse than this album.

Not even that member who pops into Intrada release threads and tells us about how bad the mastering is and it's the wrong channels, this that and the other thing and only he has the ears of an Audiophile God? In broken English. (if you laughed, good)

It goes without saying there's the definitive Blue Box set. But I guess your asking for a separate release of the first score? Thankfully I was able to afford the box set when it came out, but I think the score should have a stand alone release too. More Money...Mo Money

Any 'Live-to-Projection' concerts of this movie in the works? It has the potential to be a family-friendly movie, if the organizers can get pass the "Move your ass!" line from the film. The robbers on the boat also say “Bull#@%&!” as well.
