It was django, il grande duello and bullet for the general that got me into appreciating Bacalov. Some wonderful scores. He even composed for Fellini. because he was born in argentina a collector i knew once said "oh i collect 6 italian composers and an adopted italian" rip luis but only 20 of us knew who he was.!?!

Rest in peace Maestro Bacalov, thank you for all the great music. He was one of the first film composers I got into around 40 years ago, but only recently have I seen 2 of his western moves PRICE OF POWER and THE MAN CALLED NOON. I was very impressed with the use of music in the films, especially NOON where Bacalov really provides some majestic music to the scenes in the mountains, with more than a hint of South American flavour, I love his use of woodwinds as well - very ethereal. Some people say he copied Morricone a lot, I say they have not listened to enough of his score. As Stefan has said he could also write some gorgeous symphonic scores, just to mention one LA TREGUA, where he wrote some truly haunting music for this concentration camp drama. He could also write some superb pop style music, CUORE SOLITARE is a favourite of mine, some great themes. He knew how to use Alessandroni's chorus as well! There's one more that appeared on EMI France, MES FILMS FRANCAIS, where you can find excerpts from 5 different scores, including the masterpiece UN AMOUR INTERDIT. I am totally with you about UN AMOUR INTERDIT, Laurent. This score has such a gorgeous and haunting main theme which stays with you for years and years. One of the loveliest themes Bacalov has composed. It is a puzzle to me that not even the complete content of the old French General Music LP is available on CD nowadays. Maybe something for Music Box? There are a few Bacalov scores in Sugar´s CAM catalogue which have been reserved for a long time and I suppose that at least one or two of them can now probably be expected during the next months from our Italian labels: - LA STREGA IN AMORE (1966) - I PROTAGONISTI (1968) - LA GRANDE SCROFA NERA (1972) - L´ASSASSINO HA LE ORA CONTATE (TV/1981) - LA FRONTIERA (1996)

Indeed, sought-after titles like GLI ESECUTORI, LA CITTÀ SCONVOLTA or IL BOSS from the early/mid 70s were owned by Nazionalmusic and therefore you can imagine that original tapes for them have not been preserved. If there is nothing in the Bacalov estate, these titles can´t therefore be released at all on CD. CAM/Sugar don´t have any of those 70s Poliziesco titles composed by Bacalov.

Nice pic Henry. Were you lucky enough to attend these two parties organized by Massimo Cardinaletti in the 80's? I wasn't but still remember the accounts published both in Soundtrack and MSV. Looking at these reports and photos now is especially moving because they really mean the end of an era. I had a closer look at Bacalov's discography in the database of SoundtrackCollector and there are quite a lot of albums I know nothing of, including 2 SAMOURAI PER 100 GEISHE, IL VANGELO SECONDO MATTEO (64), LO SCATENATO (67), I QUATTRO DEL PATER NOSTER 69), MILANO CALIBRO 9 (70), ROMA BENE (71), LA SEDUZIONE (73), L'AMICA DI MIA MADRE (74), L'ULTIMA CHANCE (75), LE ROSE DI DANZICA (79), CHE FARE? (79), L'AVVOCATO DELLE DONNE (96), ILONA ARRIVA CON LA PIOGGIA (96), MARCINELLE (2003), SEA OF DREAMS (2005, I actually have only one theme on a compilation), HOTEL MEINA (2007, download only), etc. Like others, I also like very much scores like CUORI SOLITARI, L'AMICA and pity the fact Saimel didn't go on with this series. I also listened again to LA POLIZIA E' AL SERVIZIO DEL CITTADINO? and it's clearly a favourite of mine. Stefan, I also have excellent recollections from the LP LA MASCHERA but alas had no chance to give it a spin since many years. This said, I remember I used to find UN AMOUR INTERDIT even more fascinating. Just a matter of taste. Anyway, both deserve to be released on CD. From this period, L'ART D'AIMER also includes some great stuff. I attended that 1985 fest and had a lot of wonderful memories. Thank goodness we still have Morricone.
