THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB (2018) - 7/10

Following Swedish actress Noomi Rapace and American Rooney Mara, English actress Claire Foy takes a turn at portraying "Lisbeth Salander," The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, in this new crime drama. When an American computer scientist has second thoughts about a program that he created for the U.S. government, he asks hacker Lisbeth to steal it back for him. But others are after the program as well, which leads Lisbeth into a web of espionage, betrayal, and murder.

Along with the numerous action scenes, we also learn much about Lisbeth in this new tale. Claire Foy can't compete with Rapace in the role, but she is the equal of Mara. Roque BaƱos' score is above average for this type of film, adding emotion when it is needed.

Battle of Britain. Again.
1969. 9 out if 10.
Seemed appropriate to watch it today.
Gets better everytime i see it. well chosen cast, terrific on the nose dialogue and great action - even more impressive when you find out they assembled the 7th largest airforce in the world at the time just to make it and working planes flew from as far afield as canada and america and all the aerial shots with blue sky were filmed in spain. My favourite bits are the exaggerated Englishness in the characters, the families taking shelter in the tube listening to the radio, the spotter on the roof with his teapot and sandwich, the farmers thinking our parachuted Polish pilot was german, - there was a helluva lot crammed in a few hours. Plus Susannah York at her sexiest and Ron's great ever-present score. And poignant moments that give me a lump in throat.

"They hit the Rose n Crown...!"
"He'll have to drink at the Red Lion now!"
"...If they'll 'ave him!"

Haven't seen it in awhile, but I agree on your ranking.
I still remember seeing it as a teen in the theater and squirming in my seat and wringing my hands at the cockpit fire. The extended air combat scene with music only still stands out.
It was also nice seeing Robert Shaw actually playing a Brit. wink

Yeah that cockpit fire was pretty harrowing - then and now!

There was a lot crammed in. And Olivier's air chief marshall Dowding is so deliberately unhurried but utterly scene-chomping.

Don't think I've ever seen the entire film but yeah that scene was horrific, especially when I saw it at a rather young age on television. It really brought home the horrors and pain of being a fighter pilot.

Death at a Funeral (2007)
1/10
A film in the grand British tradition of looking like it should be on TV, wasting a great cast and being deeply unfunny. Nice to see Daisy Donovan at least, after last seeing her on the 11 o'clock show. It's witless and thinks swearing is funny in place of actually well written dialogue.

OVERLORD (2018) - 8/10

A platoon of American soldiers parachute into France to destroy a Nazi radio tower in advance of the D-Day invasion, only to stumble across a secret German installation in this wild war film--sci-fi--horror film mash-up. Our boys (who include the straight-forward Jovan Adepo, jaded Wyatt Russell, and a smart-alecky John Magaro) sneak into a sleepy French village and meet the beautiful Mathilde Ollivier, who lives there with her aunt and young brother. There is action aplenty when they find out what the Nazis are up to.

J.J. Abrams produced the picture, which is the first U.S. film directed by Julius Avery. Jed Kurzel provides the bombastic score.

Spotlight - 10/10

A film like this has an advantage (when done with precision) because it is based on a true story. The bluray had been sitting there for a while... t'was time to crack it.

Worthy of its nominations.

The Predator
5.5/10
I actually enjoyed it a bit more than i thought. Some of the humour works, the main lead actor isn't too bad, the kid isn't annoying, the music works. It works best when it gets schlocky. Rumour has it it was once pretty much an all-out comedy that had a predator in it, you can sort of see the joins of where that was possible.

Film starts off with what looks liek an out-take from guardians of the Galaaxy. Olivia Munn is decent, though her character makes no sense. She's just a biologist but instantly become a gun-toting heroine. A lot of the humour just fails. The motive of the captured predator makes no sense. Other scenes make no sense, i assume due to the re-editing & re-filming. Most of the cast of oddballs are wasted. Some weird editing in it. Some bad CGI and CGI predator just looks wrong. The end scene is pretty awful. Looks like any planned sequel would be eve more cartoony and stupid.

And yet, it was watchable, and the dodgy pacing and sloppy storytelling means it barely stops for breath. Probably better if yer drunk.

"... Better if yer drunk..."

Can't wait to see that on the bluray cases. smile

John Carpenter's Vampires
2/10
Badly edited, ponderously paced, flat action, music that doesn't work at all.
Sadly I found it A very dull effort.

Hereditary
7.3/10
Very well acted, nicely directed, good-looking. Never dull. Has a full-on shocking moment and some nice creepy moments. Avoided cheap stingers as far as i can recall. The last 15 minutes go full-on crazy and and are enjoyably stupid. Not exactly scary but maintains a nice tense tone throughout till then. The last track of the score was very good and i think the music did a good job throughout. Though it has this "pulse" running through it which carries a lot of the creepiness. Felt like a step up from the Blumhouse tripe but i'm not sure how good the actual script is.

Fairly dull, serviceable internet-fearing thrill-free thriller. With some unintentional larfs. Bullock is decent as the lead though.

Darkest hour
Gary oldman.
For oldman's portrayal and the subject matter, im going to give it 8.5. As someone said on here, the tube train scene was vomit inducing and rather changed the tone of everything prior. I deducted half a point for that sickly nonsense. But by the time gary oldman finished his famous speech i was ready to shoot all deluded appeasers and wade into the filthy hun. wink

NEVER LOOK AWAY (2018) - 8/10

This epic-length (3 hour) German film follows the life of painter "Kurt Barnert" (Tom Schilling) from his boyhood in Dresden under Nazi rule through his young adulthood in East Germany under the Communist GDR regime. Even after he manages to escape to West Berlin just before the Berlin Wall goes up, he is haunted by the cruelties and suffering he witnessed as a youth. But his art sustains him and helps him cope, and eventually thrive. The film is based upon events in the life of German artist Gerhard Richter.

Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck helmed 2006's THE LIVES OF OTHERS, about an agent of the East German Secret Police who becomes absorbed in the lives of the people he has under surveillance. That film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and NEVER LOOK AWAY is this year's German entry for that honor. It deserves to be nominated.
