It's always interesting, the times that you pick to post here Zelig.

The race is not over yet, so if you are just here looking to break my balls right now, let's see how it eventually turns out, ok?

How's that new stadium coming along down there BTW?

I think you're reading too much into my posts, Anz. No malice intended here.

EDIT- The latest on the stadium:

You know, it's not a bad ring, really:

Did the Marlins consult every rapper in the Miami area concerning that ring design or what?

METS, METS, METS.....someone toss another beta blocker over to me.

Especially considering they have the Bad News Bears coming out of the bullpen lately.

But, the Mets won tonight in Atlanta and moved back into first place in the NL east, and gained some ground on their lead in the wild card race.

Jerry Manuel is using the tools he has, and win or lose, he's done a superb job with this club keeping it in contention with so many injuries all season and with no bullpen in the second half.

The end draws near for the House That Ruth Built. I have to admit, I really wish the last game were not a Sunday Night ESPN game because I can not stand Miller and Morgan as an announcing team, and the last game should be called by the regular Yankee broadcast crew.

On October 2, 1976 I attended my first game at Yankee Stadium, a Saturday doubleheader against Cleveland (hard to believe that there are now a generation of fans who will never know what it's like to go see two games on one ticket) which they swept. Oscar Gamble was the first Yankee I ever saw hit a home run in person. They ended up being the last two wins of the 76 season as the next day's doubleheader which would have ended the year was rained out.

The next game I went to on September 10, 1977, a year the Yankees won their first championship since 1962, was a disaster as the Yankees were drubbed by the expansion Blue Jays by a score of 19-3!! Roy Howell ended up getting ten RBI's in the game for Toronto.

Then it was jacket day, May 27, 1978 against Toronto again. This one was a 4-1 loss with a near-thrill in the bottom of the 9th when Jim Spencer missed a game-tying HR by a matter of four feet.

August 26, 1978 Photo Album Night against Oakland was the next game I saw, and this was a 4-3 win as the Yankees were showing the charge that led them back from 14 out to win their second straight title.

My final record at Yankee Stadium for the home team in 33 seasons was 21 wins and 13 losses. And the best game in that batch along the way was without question, July 2, 1998 against Philadelphia in a game that defined the 125 win Championship season, as they fell behind 5-0, kept trying to climb back and then in the bottom 9th, Tino Martinez sent a game tying HR into the upper deck that set up an extra-inning win.

Thanks for the memories, Yankee Stadium, and here's to the coming memories in the new ballpark!

(Addendum. My first game at Shea Stadium was August 1980 against the Dodgers and Rick Monday hit a home run that landed under the seat next to me. Final Mets record in games I saw at Shea was 4-6)

Oh, BTW Anz, I have to give my congratulations to your Mets for righting the ship as well as you have. Much as I didn't like to see Willie get axed, Manuel has clearly gotten the team to respond well. Hope you can go far this time!

No telling what's going to happen, but I respect Jerry Manuel for remembering what happened last season in September, and marching out to the mound constantly making pitching changes with mediocrity to choose from in the late innings trying to avoid another disaster.

No more Billy Wagner. He's gone.

To be honest, I don't know how far the Mets can go with this bad bullpen, but who knows, they are an underdog this year and anything can happen in baseball when no one expects you to win.

I'd forgotten that I'd recently gotten my pictures from one of my Yankee Stadium visits back recently and here is a sampling of some of them.

Monument Park.

And the great ballpark, the scene of so much history.

Not seeing the County Courthouse as part of the backdrop is going to be the strangest thing for me when the new ballpark opens.

Thank you for sharing those photos Eric.

All baseball fans will miss Yankee Stadium, with all of it's rich tradition, and storied players.

I will be among them.

My pleasure to share them, Anz!

What kind of ceremonies are being planned for the last regular season game at Shea?

The Mets organization is being very tight lipped about the closing ceremonies at Shea, so I'm not sure what they have planned.

It would be extraordinary if Tom Seaver, and other members of the '69 Mets and the '86 team make an appearance in the final days.
And if Joe Namath, and some other members of the Jets Super Bowl III team could arrange to be there, that would cap it.

One can dream. smile

For now though, here's a well made video tribute to Shea, a nice picture gallery of it's history, and lots of other interesting Mets info to peruse courtesy of the official NY Mets website.

It would indeed be nice if the Jets could be honored in final ceremonies, just as it would also be appropriate to note the Giants of the 50s and 60s in the final ceremonies tonight at the Stadium, though I guess since the Giants never played in the renovated Stadium it's slightly understandable if they get overlooked (though it wouldn't be right if they were).

The Jets interestingly severed their last remaining connection to Long Island this month by moving their offices and training center to Florham Park, NJ just one mile down the road from where I live. It was really long overdue because if they were never going to go back to a stadium in NY it made no sense to keep staying in Hofstra.

Meantime, tonight is going to be very emotional for me to watch the proceedings and I hope that as far as the game goes, they go out on a good note.

The first emotional moment of the night as Bob Sheppard delivers a pre-taped message to the fans, as he's not been able to attend games this season.

Bob, I hope we'll be seeing you back for Opening Day in the new ballpark!

They're playing Bill Conti's music from "The Right Stuff" for the opening part of the ceremonies honoring the 1923 team. It works well.

Very well-done pregame ceremonies capped by a giant ovation for Bernie Williams making his first return to the Stadium since being released, and then Babe Ruth's daughter throwing out the first pitch to an injured Jorge Posada.

I'll be settling back to listen to the game on radio while watching (given my disdain for the ESPN broadcasters) and hoping for a good one.

It was a very well done ceremony.

The Yankees know how to do these things , and it did not disappoint.

The sons of both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris dressed in their fathers Yankee uniforms of the period in the early 60's was an especially moving moment for me as a baseball fan.

Bernie Williams deserved the ovation he got tonight. I've discussed him often on this thread.
He was a player I respected and admired over the years.

Yes.

Bill Conti's music worked very well.

The people that held tickets tonight for this final game at Yankee Stadium probably paid a small fortune for them, but they will have a lifetime of memories.

They say there's a big secret on who will formally move the countdown on games remaining in the Stadium from 1 to zero. I have a couple hunches but would rather wait and see if I was right or not!

Cora Rizzuto looked so youthful it's hard to believe she's in her mid-80s.

Jose Molina! And if his is the last homer hit in the old ballpark, it'll be an interesting bit of symmetry, since the last HR hit in the original Stadium in 1973 was also by a backup catcher, Duke Sims.
