JURASSIC WORLD II

Just awful. Worse than JPIII.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I hear ya!!

JP III is the second best in the series.

When I noted the "muddled plot" of THE NEXT MAN in my comments above, it may have something to do with the fact that my DVD of the film runs only 92 minutes, which is 16 minutes short of the 108-minute theatrical running time for the film. The Allied Artists release has never gotten a decent U.S. DVD release, appearing on several budget labels. The full-frame transfer on my disc could well be a TV-edited version.

But I do admit the JP III Blu-ray makes a great coaster.

JP III is the second best in the series.

I agree, but then I've only seen Jurassic Park (1993) and Jurassic Park III (2001). big grin

Jeff Bond's FSM review for the latter opens with "You have to admire Don Davis' balls."

Read it for yourself on page 34:

Elliot Goldenthal's Final Fantasy gets 3 1/2 stars???

Well, as stupid as JPIII was, and it was pretty stupid*, I wasn't bored. It held my attention. SO it was successful in that very important regard.
JW was awful from the start and had me looking at my watch less than 30 minutes in!
brm

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 9-10

I always watch it every Halloween and Christmas!

Also one of my favorites. I've seen it 3 times, but only in a theater--once upon its original release, and twice after it was converted to 3-D. Hard to believe that the film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

WINSTANLEY (1975) - 7/10

WINSTANLEY is low-budget British black-and-white period film made by historian and master cinema restorationist Kevin Brownlow, in collaboration with production designer Andrew Mollo. The film focuses on Gerrard Winstanley, an English Protestant religious reformer, political philosopher, and activist during the time of Oliver Cromwell. Winstanley and a group of impoverished peasants set up a commune on public lands. These "Diggers," as they were contemptuously called, are attacked both for trespassing and occupying land used to graze cattle. It’s a class confrontation that establishes an ongoing rhythm of persecution and defense.

The film is a study of primitive, rural communism as well as a commentary on the just-past era of hippies and free love, as the group members share ownership of what little goods they have and don't worry about who may have fathered any particular child who has been conceived. Brownlow and Mollo are able to recreate the squalor of the time, perhaps even aided by their lack of budget (it took the better part of a decade to raise funds for their feature) and without any color photography to "prettify" things.

The Great Silence (Il Grand Silenzio)
Film 7.8/10
Presentation 3/10

A subversive Italian (not really a) Western with a snowy setting and a cast of characters who have their own principles and mores, where it’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad. The picture sadly was very fuzzy and there were some awkward cuts. The sound was good, and Morricone’s score stands up well against his other (not real) westerns apart from the very top rank. I suspect a better dubbing is overdue although unlikely - some odd translations (telling a mute character to be quiet can’t surely have been in the original script) and Kinsky’s Loco had no threat or gravitas in his voice, only his eyes. Next time get Vince Vaughn, not Norman Vaughan... I’d probably get a Blu-ray of this if the picture were better but I fear some of the flaws will still exist. Still worth getting for the icy music and to see where QT might have picked up some ideas for The Hateful Eight.

DARKEST HOUR
6/10

By sheer coincidence I watched this a day after rewatching DUNKIRK- both of which conclude with Winnie's famous speech to the parliament-DH also features a short segment on the the homeland boat rescue)!

Dark Crimes (2016/2018) - 5/10
It gets points for solid acting and good use of mood etc. Although I found the movie to be generally fairly pointless. I get that the main character is investigating a murder But we never really found out why the murder took place. It is overall quite slow and somber.
It also seemed very strange to me that the movie talked a lot about the sex club And yet didn't seem to give us any information on what happened to the people who were doing these things to the women.

Dark Crimes is the single-worst film I've seen this year. COLOSSALLY boring and incoherent.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)
1.5/10

The only reason this turkey and its uh, "story", don't get a "0.0/10" is because I like Steve Martin and his whacked-out version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and there's a nice version of "A Day In The Life" sung by Barry Gibb.

Oh, and of course, Aerosmith.

Otherwise, avoid at all costs!!
