For those who care about such things:

I have received my copy of the 4K UHD Superman, and the default 5.1 track sounds like it is the original split-surround 70mm mix, or at least a very good facsimile thereof. For those who have not been thrilled with the 2000 remix, you can finally hear the discrete original mix.

The 5.1 version of the track is only on the 4K disc, not on the enclosed Blu-ray (which I think is the same as from the box set).

I just saw Neil S. Bulk tweet about this too. Now I wonder...

Would the fine lads over at LLL ever consider adding a 5.1 Blu-ray AUDIO disc to Supes for the 40th release? If so, then I think I'd have to cough up the cash, even though I own the Blue box.

Truth be told I wasn't a fan of those little rag dolls. I grew up with 12 inch GI Joe's. When boys were raised to be men!

8 inches with solid body molds and a lot of joints and VERY good likenesses, Mego were the shiz back then. The woven clothes were also really great. I still have a bunch of original Mego Trek figures and two of the Enterprise bridge playsets. These were and are still top shelf toys.

Perhaps, but many times the “original” audio track on video releases is not — many films with mono or surround tracks have them replaced by fold-downs of the new 5.1 or 7.1 mixes. Moreover, it is historically significant as it is one of the first films to have had split surrounds.

They sure were. I'm another one of those who had that stuff as a kid and have often thought, "I wish I still had them." However, I actually played with those toys and so they would look much the worse for wear had I held on to them. You must have really taken good care of your stuff, or else bought them on eBay in better shape. wink I still have my army soldiers and Navarone playset (and its box), but old plastic doesn't die, it just becomes brittle.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure some of us hadn't known.

The Megos were plastic.

I also had the old Joes, though by then they had de-emphasized the military aspects and made Joe into a bearded adventurer.

Last JOE I had was the blonde bearded one with the dog sled team. Wish I still had it, I could've played out scenes from Balto while listening to Intrada's expanded release of the score.

Even for those who had known, it was worth confirming.

Especially considering that the original DVD box set of Superman was supposed to have the Dolby Surround version of the original mix on the theatrical cut, only when it was shipped, it turned out to be a folddown of the 5.1 mix. Warner Brothers offered replacement discs in the mail. So it wouldn't be the first time for this title…

Replace the "Balto" stuff with "Leaving Home" and "The Fortress of Solitude" cues from Superman: The Movie and that could be awesome.

Better in 2019 than nothing, man!

To fans of this film, happy 40th Anniversary.

P.S. I’m surprised that Jim Phelps wasn’t the first to do this, today—of all days. smile

I love Superman. I love John Williams. But when you reach the point when you have heard the theme, the love theme and the Krypton theme as much as you’ve heard Moon River, there is not much else in the score that makes me interested. Boring orchestral masturbation that leaves me cold. I have really tried. Bought all the editions. The rerecording. The lot. But Superman is one of the rare examples of Williams doing a great theme and a mediocre rest. So different from the three original SW and Indys and the two shark films that I cannot remember the names to.

Well, I hope this little incident hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking of course it's still the safest way to travel.

If there is ONE Williams score that is unanimously acclaimed it is this one.
Next!
