A new SACD with three concertante works penned by the composer of the popular THE SNOWMAN (and, of course, many film scores).

Another aspiration is to collect all the Vasily Petrenko Shostakovich symphonies with the Liverpool Philharmonic, the cycle being very reasonably-priced on Naxos. I've heard one or two so far, and it seems that this will be a required purchase for die-hard Shostakovich fans.

I purchased those too. While I find them well-played and conducted, there are so many complete Shosty symphony cycles out now, some dirt-cheap (like the Brilliant cycle by Barshai - which I find preferable on the whole), that the competition is stiff. Kondrashin-Melodiya (now finally available in a decent re-mastering), Kitaenko with the Cologne Philharmonic (in superb SACD releases on Capriccio - now also available at budget price), and Jansons on EMI (with three different orchestras, but mostly the wonderful Bavarian Radio Symphony) all have the edge over Petrenko.

Wow! I LOVE wind concerti! So how do these sound in surround? And where did you find the SACD? I've searched all over Amazon. I used to go to a site that sold high end recordings … now what was the name of it ….

Follow-up: OnlyGoodMusic: I found it at ImportCDs, where I bought it and some other SACDs -- they have a lot of them! Thanks for alerting us to the above.

But I was delighted when Stanley Kubrick used the Waltz 2 from Shostakovich's Jazz Suite as his principal theme for the rather unfocused "Eyes Wide Shut."

Ron, Waltz 2 from Jazz Suite 2 turns up in Desplat's "The Luzhin Defence" - a great CD throughout.

Actually, Ray, that looks like a forerunner of 'Knowing,' the Nicholas Cage time capsule, Nostradamus lookalike. Fascinating.

It's actually similar to the 1935 Gaumont picture THE CLAIRVOYANT with Claude Rains. And then Karloff did an episode of THRILLER with this theme.

And here's a terrific quality recording of the Screen Director's Playhouse adaptation with E.G. Robinson:

Each time I click on the resource line, Media Player loads and then displays a message to say an error occurred with the server. Darn it!
