This is my "be-all-end-all" Holy Grail of Grails. I don't go more than a few days without listening to it. It is -as I said at the time of its release - the soundtrack of my life.

There is one cue apparently missing - and you'd only notice it of you're a total Trek wacko (me) or someone trying to put together episodic soundtracks (I did one - just one). It's a version of "One's Enough" from The Doomsday Machine, the sustain without the Enterprise exit/traveling music. It can be heard in Mirror, Mirror ("I'm not sure, but I think we've been insulted." "I'm sure.") and Obsession (when Christine tells Bones she was applying psychology to Garrovick). I haven't found anything else to be missing, so unless its's in a library cue section I keep skipping over, there ya go. Honestly, I'm not bitching and it's a few seconds off a 15 CD set - hours of bliss. Between this set, all the complete Trek film scores and the Superman Blue Box.... I have no idea if I have any real wants left.

That's a long story and not one I'm authorized to tell in detail...the short version is that these tapes had been "disappeared" from Paramount in the early 1970s (which happened to a lot of Star Trek production material) and were in private hands until GNP/Crescendo acquired them around 1990 from the person who had wisely gotten a hold of them and preserved them. The original album of The Cage/Where No Man... had been mastered from Sandy Courage's personal 1/4" tapes (which didn't sound very good).

Lukas

That short story is a quenching thumbnail, thanks!

In my mind, I'll imagine that Terry Nation stole the tapes from Paramount hoping to make as much profit off of Star Trek as he did when he created the Daleks for Doctor Who. smile

Actually this is on the set—it's on season 2, disc 5, in the bonus section, it's M63A, but we edited it to the rest of the cue (with the Enterprise exit music)...which I guess defeats the purpose of why they recorded it, but these are just the decisions that you make editorially when presenting hours and hours of music...so there you are.

Agreed. This isn't like The Outer Limits set which still managed to leave one track off from the original Crescendo.

Aside from any jettisoned music/effect tracks (which I dont miss), I guess there were some bits omitted which I wasnt aware of, according to Heath:

Unless I'm mistaken, the stereo version of the main title (NOT the end title!) is nowhere to be found on the LaLaLand release.

And there you have it. Thanks, Lukas. smile

Folks, you aren't missing anything! And considering how many of us practically grew up on this music, it's a miraculous outcome that makes me (and many others) very, very happy.

Lukas

Lukas, just so you know, when I'm buried I will have the Outer Limits set in one hand, the TOS Trek Box in the other, and LIS under my head. Sounds like a waste, but I want to see if I can "take them with me." If not, it'll make a nice offering to the Gods.

Last Child, just so you know, I'll be digging up your grave. ;-)

Lukas, I was just asking. I didn't know the answers, so I just pointed it out. It's not unreasonable that bit of stuff in that collection could have been missed.

Looking at his vast body of work, and other stuff on his IMDb page, it's a miracle some composers like him actually went home. Write, record, then when nobody is looking, sneak a pillow into the booth and take a four hour nap, then wake up and repeat the process.

Anyone else still dipping into this set? Sometimes a bunch of weeks go by and I don't spend much time on it, but I always circle back... So much awesomeness.

Nope. I have listened to the library cues and the CotK cues over and over, side by side. And it is not any of those cues. So either it was a new cue used from another source when they were redone. Or it is actually missing from the set and was possibly left off inadvertently.

I mentioned this before, but the cue missing is the Trek theme and with mostly flutes. The CotK cue 'Kirk and Lenore' is very, very similar but alas is not the same. And the Library cues all sound similar as well.

Every time I listen to the Star Trek 50th Anniversary Set with the upgraded library cues and hear "Love Scene (LM4)," I think about your project and hope this was exactly the cue you were looking for. I'd love to know how far you've progressed.

I do more than dip. I dive in!

I have a stereo set up at my workplace and I get there a good two hours before anyone else is in the building every morning. I play my favorite episode scores very often and, unlike at home, can crank it as loud as I like without disturbing others. It makes getting to work early much more enjoyable.

I like the details and info emerging in this thread.

Having the TOS box and the 50th Anniversary upgrades on CD is practically the same as owning all the Star Trek studio tapes yourself. The same only better.

Indeed… better because we have all of the work and annotations already done by our intrepid Preservers to put it all in context.

And it's more accessible than a pile of tape reels.

And we've got it preserved in a digital format that can be migrated to future platforms, so there will be no fading of tapes and no format obsolescence.

And the music is distributed around the world now, so it can't become lost. If the guy with a box full of tapes had suffered a house fire before they were transferred to digital, all of it would be gone.

Sad to say I have not listened to the whole set. I never purchased it, but I inherited my Dad's set. I have listened to the episodes I remember having the best music (Amok Time and Doomsday Machine). I will have to go back to it some day, but I really have many other CDs that my Dad had that I never had and they are still sealed. I have not bought new stuff due to this fact.

I'm sorry to hear about you father, Kim. But I'm glad you can appreciate his collection. If you want to hear something beautiful and sad in the Star Trek box, try

S1 Disc1, Track 2 - Doctor Bartender

Still listen on a regular basis. Today is the 50th anniversary of recording Friday's Child, for instance.

The only thing I dont like is the proprietary CD cases because they have fold-out trays. They make it harder to close - mine broke and you cant simply replace them with another 4-disc case. And it would be nice to get some tracked in episodes.

"Glorious! Glorious!"

First we get "anniversary releases" based on the film debut in theaters.
Now, we get "anniversaries" based on the date of the soundtrack release????!!!!!

Oy gevalT!
