I liked Chris Pine's ability to riff off Shatner while still bringing his own acting chops to the table. From the trailor I don't think they looked hard enough for someone who could do the same with Solo. Ford had that one in a million kind of cocky charm that just comes across as asshole if anybody else does it--but I'm hoping to be proved wrong...

Agree, a 100%.

When I watched Baby Driver I thought "this kid should play Han Solo" because he had the same swagger, confidence and looks more like a young Ford than the guy the ended up with....

Yeah, many of us had this thought, no doubt influenced by Baby's wardrobe.

It's more disappointing that he actually auditioned and was on the short list. Dang

I'm not sure how I feel about JW's involvement. On the one hand Rogue One was the first JW free Star Wars film. And I loved the score. But it was grounded so totally in his themes style.

Someday we'll get a Star Wars film that goes out on its own, either by choice or necessity. And Powell is at least as good a choice as any for that.

Nice to know The Maestro is still interested though.

I'm sad I didn't realize that Williams was doing a San Diego concert until it was already too late to get tickets.

I am cautiously optimistic about Solo given the initial trailers are usually fairly weak both musically and otherwise. I agree with most of the comments RE the casting but I could still get behind it.

There is the newly revised 'Han Solo and The Princess' theme from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Suite that was premiered by Williams at the San Diego Concert earlier this month. Subsequently the same piece was premiered by the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall recently- the video attached below.

Interestingly enough, Leia's theme is absent from this revised version whereas the original version premiered on the Gerhardt Recording from the 80's had it in abundance.

Hence, I have a feeling this might be the new HAN SOLO movie theme that Williams was recently commissioned for the upcoming film. If so, we could see the first formal recording of it on the OST album. If NOT, I would still be hopeful to get another new theme altogether.

I might theorize we will see/hear hints of this in Solo, but I always thought of it as the romance theme of Han and Leia. It might be odd to hear it without a Leia. A permutation of it more playful and flippant, perhaps.

Variations on a theme are nice smile.

That new variation of Hans and Leia's theme is really great. It's so wonderful to hear variations on such a stirring melody. I hope we get a new recording of this - though if that is, indeed, the new theme he's provided for the upcoming film remains to be seen of course.

I can't imagine the new theme isn't a new theme at all, but a variation of the Princess Leia/Han Solo love theme.

Nor can I imagine Ron Howard describing the new concert piece as a new Han Solo theme. I just don't see any connection at all between the new concert piece and the new film.

I completely agree. Nor would Williams himself have told Variety "I’m writing a theme for Han Solo" if he meant "I'm arranging an old theme for Han Solo."

Also, how in the world would this theme, tinged with longing and sadness for the love between Han Solo and Princess Leia, fit this new movie?

Maybe the young Han Solo actor hooks up with the creepy looking CG Carrie Fisher facsimile from the end of ROGUE ONE, and then they roofie each other so it doesn't violate cannon?

If Marvel's "canon" is to be believed, there's gonna be a hookup, alright! Just not with Leia.

Pity the LSO aren't involved despite the score been recorded in Abbey Road. The LSO were certainly missed for TFA and TLJ .

I'm sure the orchestra will be equally up to the task. Shapiro's Captain Underpants was recorded in London but not with the LSO and it sounded big, bold and great. I haven't heard too many Powell scores that sound small and constrained so I trust he will deliver a score with a sound that conforms to the earlier SW scores.

If you're talking about Sana Starros, I don't think that character is supposed to be in this movie. Thandie Newton's character is named Val and she has 15-20 years on the Han character. The other main cast actresses are white and/or droids.

And that "marriage" was part of a con she and Solo were pulling when he screwed her over. I think the only hints of Sana's true romantic ties in the Marvel timeline have been with Chelli Aphra.

Well that would be rewriting history. Han never met Lea until the rescue attempt on the Death Star. He even said, "Princess? What Princess?".

Likely they were involved. Many of the LSO recordings make use of session players mixed into the orchestra, and most London sessions use a large portion of LSO musicians.

Ron Howard said on twitter: Film is locked, score is done.

    Can't wait!

I don't think a Disney Star Wars film has failed yet, even the "troubled" Rogue One and Last Jedi.
Should be interesting to see how this one performs.
