Anyone ever used any? As relatives are growing few and far between (aside from the massive influx I've just had 'by marriage'), I want to start the process as some family have got so far, but I think there is far, far more...

So - any recommendations before I start paying?

I'm not sure if geographical location would be a major factor in choosing such a thing...complete newbie to it...but if it is, I would need a site that deals primarily with UK.

Whatever site you use, if it requires a monetary subscription, read the agreement carefully. If you give them a credit card number, they will automatically renew your subscription at end of initial period unless notified, whether you were satisfied or not.
As a starter, many libraries have free (limited) access to several major genealogical sources.

EDIT: You might want to start with the website of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) (Mormons) which is said to have the largest genealogical collection on earth (for all countries). Their website is free:

Yes - almost criminal that you have to opt out rather than opt in to these things, isn't it?

OK - bit of hunting, bit of testing...FamilySearch did not seem to want to know me, or my family, at all...fair enough!! Sticking with Ancestry.co.uk...see how we go after the free trial!!

So, how did it go after the free trial?

I've always been curious about the Hardcastle line. My parents married in Missouri and had my sister Sue and I, and then after they divorced my mother moved to California, remarried (to a Woodall), and had 4 more children. My late sister Janice (died from smoking) did some remarkable research about the Woodalls as well as my mother's Shoemaker line, but nothing about my own little Hardcastle line. In 1991 I drove about 7,000 miles solo around the U.S. and spent a week in Missouri, and as a lark did my best to find ANY Hardcastles (had been told that my biological father, Millard Wesley Hardcastle, had died in his early 60s), and burned up the phone lines calling just about every Hardcastle from Joplin to Springfield, without any luck. So, for me, I'm the last of the Hardcastle-named line, although my sister has children and grandchildren and even a great grandchild who are part of the original Hardcastle line but without the name. So I've long thought about doing a search too. Who knows? My biological father could have left more children for all I know.

Interestingly, although I've only met one other Hardcastle in my life (the cafeteria lady when I was in the 7th grade was a Hardcastle), I did speak to a Ron Hardcastle who also lived in Southern California and came from the midwest, and, coincidentally, his father had also been named after a president of the U.S. When I spent a month in London when I was in my mid 20s I found PAGES of Hardcastles in the phone directory! Lots of Hardcastles in Britain!

I stuck with it, actually...uncovered quite a lot of fascinating info...including a branch of the family that none of my close family knew existed...actually got reunion planned for mid 2014 to find out who we should know! Also interesting to see a couple of celebs on there...three that we were well aware of, but one real surprise which sadly will have to remain private information.
