What do you feel is the most disturbing film you ever seen . One I feel was on tonight on TCM JIMMY BLACKSMITH-78-An AUSTRALIAN film about a couple of sick aborigines going around killing woman throughout the Australian countryside. It's technique of showing the most innocent harmless woman and girls including babies being slaughter by 2 sub humans just sets off a raw emotion in any decent human being. You are just waiting for them to get it by film's end.

This thread could go bad.....

....but for what i's worth, I'll throw in Lars von Triers superb (yes, superb) Antichrist (for obvious reasons, if you've seen it), and Srdan Spasojevic's A Serbian Film (again, for obvious reasons, if you've seen it)....

Oh, and Bambi...

I agree that THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH is disturbing, but I don't think it's cool referring to the two aborgines as subhuman. Of course I obviously don't approve of their murderous actions, but I think the movie shows that the treatment they received from many of the European settlers was subhuman as well. I find it to be a provocative film which casts a very sad eye on human stupidity and terrible misjudgements.

"STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE"

And no, I'm not trying to be a smart alek and/or derail the thread. Transporter Accident anyone? Man, that bothered me no end, and ruined the whole movie for me. It stopped the show. A very disturbing, and unnecessary thing to insert into the story, especially so early on. I've seen countless "slasher films", etc. and none of them disturbed me as much as this for some reason. I realize it was only one scene, and that nothing graphic was shown, but for some reason, I couldn't get past it when I watched the film. I kept thinking back to what it implied....

Guess I was too sensitive a kid.

BTW, I agree that "BAMBI" is disturbing. Too disturbing for *little* kids.

ADDED: I haven't seen "THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH". It sounds like I don't want to.

There's lots of contenders but the first one I thought of was LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR and that ending.

After almost 50 years, I still can't get the "tongue scene" out of my head
...from the film "Blood Feast"!

I've winced through plenty over the years, but nowadays I draw the line at genital mutilation and any eyeball stuff.
The crucifix scene and tree rape from Exorcist and Evil Dead were not nice and I wouldn't watch that Lars Von Trier film because I read about THAT scene (also it looked too arty-farty and boring, so not sure I would have bothered anyway).

Offhand, I'd say "Pink Flamingos" would be my pick. But ironically, it's also a hilarious film.

Maybe "Man Bites Dog"? But again, also wickedly funny in spots.

I guess if one takes "disturbing" as something that psychologically shakes you to your roots, then "The Exorcist" would fit the bill. It goes to the core of a person's beliefs--or lack of.

I used to search for this sort of film for a while. I eventually found the one that I couldn't watch. It was a movie called Murder Set Pieces. Trust me you don't want to watch it.

Close to that on the disturbing but very good is a movie called Martyrs. It actually has a decent plot and resolution. Then there is the always fun Japanese movie called Ichi the Killer one of the most gory Japanese movies I've ever seen.

I think you missed the point of this film.

Pier Paolo Pasolini's SALO, or THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM.

Delicious with dread, if you know what I mean.

Timmer…that scene still haunts me, and I haven't seen this one for over three decades!

Many films that have been considered "disturbing" in their own day, have been reconsidered as either "influential" or "ground-breaking" in ours. Herewith a list of some few such titles:

WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES ("HAXAN" 1922)
FREAKS (1932)
ECTASY (1933-Made a star of Hedy Lamarr)
TRIUMPH OF THE WILL (1935)
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (banned for children in England, among other places) (1937)
PEEPING TOM (1960 - effectively ended Michael Powell's directorial career)
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
THE WILD BUNCH (1969)

Although, I suppose certainly one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen is:
PSYCHO (1960)
followed, to a similar extent, by
JAWS (1975)
Both of which affected the way I view both taking a shower, and swimming in the ocean.
