Minority Report is a fantastic film - incredibly underrated by filmgoers.

I have problems with some of the politics of MUNICH, but I can't deny its sheer storytelling power. It's an intense, haunting and stunningly filmed tale of espionage and guilt. But most of the reviews are pretty lukewarm about the movie as a whole.

I think 1941 is my choice, because at the time of its release it bombed at the box-office, and most critics panned it badly. WHY? Who knows? I think it's an excellent, bombastic comedy! Even renowned The New Yorker critic Pauline Kael could not understand WHY the film bombed in the USA. She wrote that it was jam packed with everything that Americans traditionally love in their comedy films.
As for the mentions of Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, I found it to be a disappointing sequel on several levels. The memorable character that Lawrence Kasdan, Philip Kaufman and George Lucas created for Raiders Of The Lost Ark would, never, Never, NEVER allow himself to be saddled with a blonde and a kid. The REAL Indy would've ditched those two dead weights in a heartbeat. The lame script by Lucas chums Willard Huyck and Gloris Katz completely bastardized a fantastic movie character, in my opinion. In spite of that, it's a fun, popcorn movie.

Without question, and by a long mile:
A.I. - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Not only is it the most underrated Spielberg film, but IMO one of the most underrated films of all time. Fortunately, it has grown a bit in people's minds since it came out 13 years ago, so it's closer to the appreciation as the masterpiece that it is.
Other underrated Spielberg films are HOOK and INDY IV, which -- despite some warts -- have many redeeming qualities that go unnoticed.
Often-criticized Spielberg films like 1941, ALWAYS and AMISTAD deserve some of the criticism they get, but none of them are without certain values. Even 1941, which IMO is Spielberg's worst film ever.
My impression is that films like EMPIRE OF THE SUN, TEMPLE OF DOOM, MINORITY REPORT or WAR OF THE WORLDS are NOT underrated. Quite the contrary, they seem to be praised either in a cult connection or as good films in their own regard.
A topic like this needs definition -- are we talking 'underrated' in the sense that it is little known, didn't do to well in the box office or that it's generally underappreciated from a qualitative viewpoint?

I think his most underrated is EMPIRE OF THE SUN. I LOVE that movie, for many reasons, and I think it should have done better.
