He's my favorite director which is why I'm starting so many threads on him.smileI think his most underrated is EMPIRE OF THE SUN. I LOVE that movie, for many reasons, and I think it should have done better.

Well, since it's trashed routinely --- unfairly, in my opinion --- I would have to go with "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". It did well enough at the box office for a film that is attacked so often. Siskell and Ebert, among others, gave it good reviews too.

Or, perhaps, since it now has somewhat of a cult following, the originally-maligned "1941".

Minority Report is a fantastic film - incredibly underrated by filmgoers.

I don't get the dislike for it, either. Whatever flaws it might have could just as easily be levied against the other Indy flicks.

Do you mean by an audience or by the film makers themselves? If you mean the latter then I would say WOTW comes in that category. The filmed story became a sort of footnote to localised historic events. You also have to wonder what Wells himself would have thought.

I rarely hear much mention of 'Amistad' so I'll go with that one. I enjoy that film (with the caveat that I don't believe I've seen all of his films).

I have problems with some of the politics of MUNICH, but I can't deny its sheer storytelling power. It's an intense, haunting and stunningly filmed tale of espionage and guilt. But most of the reviews are pretty lukewarm about the movie as a whole.

I think 1941 is my choice, because at the time of its release it bombed at the box-office, and most critics panned it badly. WHY? Who knows? I think it's an excellent, bombastic comedy! Even renowned The New Yorker critic Pauline Kael could not understand WHY the film bombed in the USA. She wrote that it was jam packed with everything that Americans traditionally love in their comedy films.
As for the mentions of Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, I found it to be a disappointing sequel on several levels. The memorable character that Lawrence Kasdan, Philip Kaufman and George Lucas created for Raiders Of The Lost Ark would, never, Never, NEVER allow himself to be saddled with a blonde and a kid. The REAL Indy would've ditched those two dead weights in a heartbeat. The lame script by Lucas chums Willard Huyck and Gloris Katz completely bastardized a fantastic movie character, in my opinion. In spite of that, it's a fun, popcorn movie.

There is no underrating of Minority Report anywhere in the world of cinematic enthusiasts. It is rated perfectly.

Now, Munich, however. The last time which Spielberg was engaged as a dramatist and a sensationalist, yes I would love to make the case for its under-valuement.

War Of The Worlds. The film sadly got chewed up in the wake of Tom Cruise's couch-jumping antics and idiotic complaints about how "the son should have died!", and yet it's filled with spellbinding passages, genuine terror and some of the best sound design of the last decade. And Cruise delivers one of his best performances. Watch it again...it's a lot better than people give it credit for.

Mr. Jack, I am with YOU on War Of The Worlds.

It's even more fascinating if you subscribe to the theory that the majority of the movie is a nightmare experienced by Cruise's Ray Ferrier character.

WELL then, nuts_score, you & I are EQUAL as gods!

"There is no underrating of Minority Report anywhere in the world of cinematic enthusiasts. It is rated perfectly."

From one god to another, I think that we should AGREE to DISAGREE over this minor point.

After all, we gods have so much more to deal with than trivia like this.

Well, I'd go for Temple of Doom which not only do I think is vastly under-rated but is actually my favourite Indy movie.

Sure the middle sags a bit but it is bookended by the most incredible opening and climax to any action movie, ever. Short around was a perfect sidekick and I was so disappointed they didn't bring him back. And yeah Willie was annoying but not half as annoying as she would have been if they had made her a Marion clone.

Another Spielberg movie I think is under-rated is his little-seen TV movie Something Evil, seriously chilling stuff.

Without question, and by a long mile:

A.I. - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Not only is it the most underrated Spielberg film, but IMO one of the most underrated films of all time. Fortunately, it has grown a bit in people's minds since it came out 13 years ago, so it's closer to the appreciation as the masterpiece that it is.

Other underrated Spielberg films are HOOK and INDY IV, which -- despite some warts -- have many redeeming qualities that go unnoticed.

Often-criticized Spielberg films like 1941, ALWAYS and AMISTAD deserve some of the criticism they get, but none of them are without certain values. Even 1941, which IMO is Spielberg's worst film ever.

My impression is that films like EMPIRE OF THE SUN, TEMPLE OF DOOM, MINORITY REPORT or WAR OF THE WORLDS are NOT underrated. Quite the contrary, they seem to be praised either in a cult connection or as good films in their own regard.

A topic like this needs definition -- are we talking 'underrated' in the sense that it is little known, didn't do to well in the box office or that it's generally underappreciated from a qualitative viewpoint?

ALWAYS. In my opinion. I was so touched and moved at the end I couldn't speak for about half an hour.

Even 1941, which IMO is Spielberg's worst film ever.

I agree. I could never really get into the film, although it does have its rare moments. However, the longer version, believe it or not, is an improvement over the shorter, theatrical version. (To me anyway.)

I thought it only right to bring it up as "underrated" though, since there are quite a few people who love it (NOW anyway) --- many on this message board, as we've seen from previous posts and threads.
