Guardians of the Galaxy has the wiff of summer bomb, yeah, that is what I predict.

I don't know, if so many people can love "Frozen", then GotG has hope.

That's my prediction. The previews leaves you scratching your head and saying WTF is this? When I saw Winter Soldier GOTG was one of the trailers shown. I can tell you there was not one reaction from the audience. There was a deafening WTF silence in the room.

I actually thought the Guardians of the Galaxy preview was very savvy at explaining the core concept (or at least the team) and tone - the whole police lineup with character descriptions, personality bits, etc. Very handy. I had a passing familiarity with the team from an episode of Ultimate Spider-man, but my spouse was clueless before the preview and knows enough about the team now that we were able to discuss it. With over two months until the movie's release, I'd anticipate a second preview at some point soon that focuses a little more on the story.

They're also saturating theaters with it. It's been in front of every movie I've seen in theaters since the trailer came out, excepting Muppets Most Wanted which probably wouldn't have been a good fit for a flipping-the-bird joke. Enough people will get the jist by 8/1. I can't see it doing the numbers that the recent Captain America or Iron Man sequels did, but I can see it doing the numbers that the first Thor, Hulk, and Captain Americas did.

I guess that is a dig at Frozen, anyway it made over a billion dollars for some reason, families!
Families are not going to see GOTG.

It is already an action heavy summer, that started early with Captain America 2, or Spiderman 2, the general audience might very well have just plain old action movie fatigue by August.

On the comic book nerd scale GOTG rates high, which means to the average Joe, it does not rate so high.

The Hollywood Reporter already tagged it for trouble. And to me at least, snarky comic book action movie is so entirely overbaked now, it is a thoroughly dead horse.

I have no prior knowledge of this product and when I see the previews I just wonder, "Is it Star Wars? Is it Lord of the Rings? Is it Avengers? It might be a great movie but it looks like a Golan-Globus knockoff.

Guardians of the Galaxy might indeed flop, but I for one am thrilled Marvel is making the gamble rather than just going the safe route of throwing out more coventional superheroes on Earth. There's a lot more going on in the original Marvel Comics Universe than just the Avengers and such, and if they want to bring In some of the other characters and expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe they have to start somewhere anyway. I love that they're digging deeper into the Marvel mythology, I love that they're doing a space opera, and I love that they're unabashedly embracing some of the goofier comic-book aspects to come out of '70s Marvel and having the audacity to throw it into one of their big, expensive tentpole productions for mass audiences. Bring it on!

That hasn't been the reaction everywhere, of course, particularly when it first came out (a while before Captain America: The Winter Soldier - the trailer had already been out a little while by the time that movie came out). There are plenty of people who are very, very excited for this one.

That article points out the riskiness, which to me is a selling point. But it's not really tagging it for trouble, as you say - more like pointing out it's a big unknown, that could go either way.

That's how I feel, basically - I'm excited that, even though I really liked the recent Iron Man and Captain America sequels, they're not just resting on their laurels and pumping out standard Avengers character sequels only. Looking forward to this and Ant Man more than Avengers 2.

Every movie I have seen that has the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer in front of, the audience seems to enjoy the trailer. Especially when Rocket Raccoon shows up. At Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this was the only trailer that seemed to interest anyone. I agree that there are plenty of people excited, including my wife, who is not at all familiar with the characters, and after the trailer she was sold. If the film is half as entertaining as the trailer, I am guessing that the fact that this is a Marvel film will bring in the audience the first couple of weeks and word of mouth will do the rest. Opening in August doesn't hurt either.

These $200 million movies are going to hit the wall like George Lucas and Spielberg said. As spectacular a first week as Spiderman 2 had the drops in box office already make it look pretty unlikely that it will reach the $600 plus mark to make any profit in the end. When you make $92 million in a few days and still cannot reach a profit you know something is out of whack.

The other point is that these studios are banking fewer movies, and making mostly very expensive action genre product, Disney pumping out Marvel picture after Marvel picture, then Star Wars after Star Wars. What we do not know is how many interesting scripts, some of those genre fantasy pictures, will never be made because the strategy has become so tentpole / commercial.

Gee, doesn't sound like a ripoff of THE AMERICANS on Fox much. The year of the sleeper agents so we can return to the good old cold war days. BTW, how can one be a "former" sleeper agent and still take orders from the Kremlin? Blackmail perhaps?

The big companies are putting less "small" movies out there in favor of blockbuster action movies, sure, but I'd wager there are more small, independent movies being made every year than before. The fact that they're not being distributed by the majors means that they're not as likely to pop up in the multiplex, but they'll go to indie theaters, or they'll go to alternate venues such as direct-to-disc, on demand, streaming services, etc. If the small scripts are good, someone will want to make them.

I found The Americans really dull and downer and pointless, nice actors, but I feel like this cold war stuff is really a ship that sailed.

Oh I agree with you, there are lots of small independent movies, which is great for the art house crowd, but a tiny fraction of our population will ever go to an art house cinema - ever, in their life. What I am saying is there is a large divide between those movies, which might be $1 million to $20 million, put out by small studios overseas shingles, and the enormous productions that are $150 to $250 million. There used to be a decent amount of mid-budget from from major studios that would enter the regular movie marketplace, the multiplex at the mall. There is less and less of that. Making it worse - the venues are showing your monster picture like Spiderman 2 or Captain America on 3 or 4 screens each. So if you have a 10 screen house, that leaves little room.

The fact they are sticking it at the tail end of the Summer season makes me to believe the studio doesn't have much faith in the film. It's a gamble really. With no competition will it be a late Summer hit, or will the audience be burnt out by then?

I just checked The Mummy over at the imdb. It seems Universal want to continue with the sub Indiana Jones version, & the director wanted to go with something darker & creepy. I'm with the director on this one.
