Guardians of the Galaxy has the wiff of summer bomb, yeah, that is what I predict.
That's my prediction. The previews leaves you scratching your head and saying WTF is this? When I saw Winter Soldier GOTG was one of the trailers shown. I can tell you there was not one reaction from the audience. There was a deafening WTF silence in the room.
It is already an action heavy summer, that started early with Captain America 2, or Spiderman 2, the general audience might very well have just plain old action movie fatigue by August.
On the comic book nerd scale GOTG rates high, which means to the average Joe, it does not rate so high.
The Hollywood Reporter already tagged it for trouble. And to me at least, snarky comic book action movie is so entirely overbaked now, it is a thoroughly dead horse.

That article points out the riskiness, which to me is a selling point. But it's not really tagging it for trouble, as you say - more like pointing out it's a big unknown, that could go either way.

That hasn't been the reaction everywhere, of course, particularly when it first came out (a while before Captain America: The Winter Soldier - the trailer had already been out a little while by the time that movie came out). There are plenty of people who are very, very excited for this one.
Every movie I have seen that has the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer in front of, the audience seems to enjoy the trailer. Especially when Rocket Raccoon shows up. At Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this was the only trailer that seemed to interest anyone. I agree that there are plenty of people excited, including my wife, who is not at all familiar with the characters, and after the trailer she was sold. If the film is half as entertaining as the trailer, I am guessing that the fact that this is a Marvel film will bring in the audience the first couple of weeks and word of mouth will do the rest. Opening in August doesn't hurt either.

The big companies are putting less "small" movies out there in favor of blockbuster action movies, sure, but I'd wager there are more small, independent movies being made every year than before. The fact that they're not being distributed by the majors means that they're not as likely to pop up in the multiplex, but they'll go to indie theaters, or they'll go to alternate venues such as direct-to-disc, on demand, streaming services, etc. If the small scripts are good, someone will want to make them.

Oh I agree with you, there are lots of small independent movies, which is great for the art house crowd, but a tiny fraction of our population will ever go to an art house cinema - ever, in their life. What I am saying is there is a large divide between those movies, which might be $1 million to $20 million, put out by small studios overseas shingles, and the enormous productions that are $150 to $250 million. There used to be a decent amount of mid-budget from from major studios that would enter the regular movie marketplace, the multiplex at the mall. There is less and less of that. Making it worse - the venues are showing your monster picture like Spiderman 2 or Captain America on 3 or 4 screens each. So if you have a 10 screen house, that leaves little room.

The fact they are sticking it at the tail end of the Summer season makes me to believe the studio doesn't have much faith in the film. It's a gamble really. With no competition will it be a late Summer hit, or will the audience be burnt out by then?
