COCOON
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 260

By 1985, composer James Horner's career was flying fast and furious after scoring Star Trek II just a few years earlier. By the mid-80s Horner had broken the sound barrier, and in the summer of '85 he established his relationship with director Ron Howard on the 20th Century Fox film Cocoon. From the opening notes that evoke a sense of wonder, the viewer knows the film will take him on a magical journey. The music itself is no less a magical journey. At times the score evokes playfulness, adventure, romance, heartbreak, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and glory. All dimensions James Horner excels at and was his hallmark throughout the '80s.

Intrada's expanded re-issue of Cocoon is a long overdue reissue, less so for its expansion than for its sonic upgrade. The original album released in 1985 was prepared in accordance with that era’s aesthetics, with agreeable results, yet far removed from the original dynamics captured by engineer Armin Steiner on the Fox scoring stage. This release uses Steiner’s original 3-track mixes, resulting in a definitive presentation of one of the composer’s major early efforts. Entire score newly mastered by Mike Matessino, with significant improvements in stereo image, clarity courtesy multi-track masters housed at 20th Century Fox. Entire production courtesy Fox and Universal Music Group. Additional source cues plus Michael Sembello's "Gravity" appear at end of CD as extras.

Cocoon stars Wilfred Brimley, Don Ameche, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Jack Gilford, Maureen Stapleton, Gwen Verdon, and Herta Ware as denizens of a Florida retirement community. They constitute a kind of geriatric wild bunch, most of whom find themselves mysteriously rejuvenated after a spot of trespassing and a series of dips in a nearby estate swimming pool that just happens to be a temporary holding tank for a bouquet of alien pods imbued with an invigorating “life force.” But little do they know that while the water may cure all that ails them, it comes with a high cost.

Yes, the clarity even on the clips, is astonishing. Sounds even better than FSM's Trek II/III remastering job!

But has it sold out already? My order read that it MIGHT be on back-order. Tried 10 times this morning to order it, but "Cocoon" wasn't brought to their online store until AFTER I gave up, and then I returned 6 or 7 hours later to finally be able to find it but WITH the back-order proviso. (Or has it been saying that all day?)

I received the "Could be on back order to Nov 4th" message when I ordered just a few minutes ago.

If you go to the actual product page, you'll notice a pre-order date of November 4th listed right above the price:

Fear not! It's just not in stock until next week.

Hot damn. I promised myself I'd get Cocoon if it ever got the "label treatment", and here it is. A pleasure to put back in my collection.

Said the same for me. I hunch it is an automated response for ordering anything technically not in stock. (Granted, I ordered it at 8:30pm EST, so I hope it is not sold out!) Been waiting decades for this one!

Matessino strikes again!

Well, almost. I did the mixes (after Neil Bulk did the prep) but Dan Hersch mastered.
