facehugger, I'd like to make a respectful suggestion to you. Let me say that I have not always posted wonderful comments about all scores. Some have made my ears bleed. We all have the right to not like certain scores and to love other scores. I've seen a few positive comments from you but very very few, and I've never seen you start your own topic or thread. I'd like to see you start your own topic that deals with a score or scores that bring you joy. Give us some insight into scores you love. I know you like Goldsmith, so post something, an original topic, about what you love.
As film score lovers, I would hope that most of what we celebrate or talk about are scores that give us pleasure, and we want to share with others what brings us joy. Yep, there are some that give me no pleasure, and I've commented on those, but I feel more obligated to also share the joy.
This is just a respectful suggestion that suggests you start a topic that shares what you adore.
About this topic...Tyler continues to grow as a composer for me.

You seem like a reasonable person so I'll explain this to you:
I appear to be mainly "negative" because to me, film music has plumbed into this miserable state. Not that "film music" was a highbrow art to begin with, at least some people (e.g. Goldsmith) TRIED to become something more than a cog in a soda dispenser. Nowadays, 99% of "composers" automatically treat themselves as bottom feeders of the Hollywood cesspool. Couple that commercial consideration with the bullshit that is the U.S. Copyright/DMCA system, "film music" as an ART is on its last breath, if not dead completely.
So you want me to talk positive? Truth be told, the only piece of "film composer"-related music that impressed me this year is James Newton Howard's concert piece I Would Plant An Apple Tree, composed in 2008. But I don't want to start a topic about it. --Why? The simple reason is that YOU can't hear it. It's not "commercially released." See how sad this is? James Newton Howard spent a year composing this concert piece and you probably never even knew it existed. Meanwhile we have 10+ threads raving how Man of Steel is the second coming of Jesus. No wonder the man said in an interview that he is trying to sell caviar on the same stand others are selling burritos.
TL;DR Everything is in DECLINE.
Feel free to use that awesome "ignore" button if you don't want me pointing out that the "rainbow" you guys are "positive" about is made of piss.

As for Brian Tyler, guy started promising but has become annoyingly generic in recent years.
I suggest you listen to his Battle LA, Army of Two 2, Expendable 1/2 and tell me with a straight face that he is even making a half-assed effort. --He really should follow John Powell and Gregson-Williams' example. At least those two guys had the decency to take a sabbatical when they got burnt out.

His score for the EX2 was very great. Some great old school action music, and terrific "Makin' An Entrance" track - one of the most powerful cues he ever wrote.

Fair enough, facehugger. Glad you responded. You are right that I have never heard of James N Howard’s I Would Plant An Apple Tree. I like most of his scores and wish I could hear it. That doesn’t mean that there are not any other scores you could talk about. I started topics of Howard’s Dinosaurs and other scores. I’ve started topics on Goldsmith. I.E. One Little Indian. Doesn’t matter if a composer is still alive or has passed; joyous music can be discussed.
I’m a Silver Ager, and I do miss the melodic scores from the Golden and Silver Ages. In regards to current scores, I’m not thrilled with all synth scores nor ambient droning. Zimmer can be a miss for me like in Man Of Steel and a hit for me like in The Lone Ranger. I have to plug my ears to some current scores, but I still look forward to Howard Shore, J N Howard, sometimes Tyler, John Powell, Eshkeri, and a few others.
I just don’t see the current state of scores as a glass totally half empty. Sometimes it is half full.

So did I misread? I thought this board is called "film score message board" not "film score POSITIVE MESSAGE board"?

I'm glad that we made peace.
I just wish that the usual "discussion" of this board consists of more than "Oh I love it!" "Oh I love it too!" A score is to be "criticized" (it's called film critics not film complimentors after all) and analyzed: which part is good and which part is bad and why.
Example, Man of Steel is 99% bad, but it's not without its 1% merit. (The wailing woman is annoying but the synth post-processing of the orchestra gives it a "glossy" "metal" effect which worked very well.) I just gave one sentence of analysis that is more informative than 20-pages of mindless hyping ("I love it! Best score EVAR!") in the Man of Steel thread. That frustrates me.

I don't decide since I can't put you in brainwash machine when you disagree with me. But I have my opinions of you and your taste.

BTW, feel free to say anything bad of Jerry. I like his music but I don't care what you think.
So you've already made your opinion about me and my taste? Then you saw that Goldsmith is/was one of my favorite composers, right? I just don't worship him like some people do.
