According to slashfilm, Tyler Bates will be scoring Guardians of the Galaxy. http://www.slashfilm.com/tyler-bates-to-score-marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy/#more-190932 A composer has been set for Marvel Studio’s August 2014 galactic adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. Tyler Bates will write the music for the James Gunn directed film. Bates has worked with Gunn on his previous two films, Super and Slither, plus he’s also well-known for his work with Batman vs. Superman director Zack Snyder on films like Watchmen, 300 and Sucker Punch. We’ll next hear his work on the thrillers 7500 and The Sacrament. Here’s Gunn from Facebook: Grateful to be working with my favorite composer, Tyler Bates, on Guardians of the Galaxy. Unlike most films, Tyler writes huge chunks of the score first so that I can actually film to the music. During action scenes and huge dramatic moments we blare the score on set so that the cast, crew, and camera can move in harmony with the music. Music is often an afterthought in film, but never for us. And everything Tyler’s done so far has been amazing! Guardians of the Galaxy is out August 1, 2014.

But in the end, this is a film about a talking tree and a rocket-wielding raccoon. So why do I even care... Haha! I laughed out loud at that one!

Neither surprised nor disappointed here. I don't hate Bates. Don't think he's great, but I think a lot of his terrible stuff is not entirely on him. The guy has, after all, had the misfortune of collaborating with Marcus Nispel, who also managed to get a disappointing score from Jonathan Elias, and Zack Snyder and Rob Zombie, who have asked things of him that don't exactly allow him to shine. But he's shown some glimmers of talent here and there, and I must say that Craig Armstrong wasn't on my radar until The Incredible Hulk blew me away, so I have high hopes that with a project like this Bates'll be able to surprise us. I honestly haven't heard any of his scores, though I have recently acquired Watchmen and Immortals through Intrada's sales. I'll be giving them a spin to see what his stuff sounds like. I had the same reaction to Armstrong - didn't know who he was until his impressive Hulk score.

OK, now that the bitter fanboys have had their chance to piss on this man, let me offer my opinion. He's a very talented musician and a rather nice human being. His work on some of the films that have been mentioned have been rather good IMHO, sure ht's not Jerry Goldsmith or Hans Zimmer.. He's his own man and I for one will keep a very open mind and look forward to hearing what he is asked to provide this film. I'm told he's already working on it and getting a couple of songs ready to be used for playback on set so they can shoot to them. I wish him the best on this one. As for the bitter clueless fanboys who are pissing on him... get a life... Ford A. Thaxton

Bates is pure garbage. Succinctly put. His work on some of the films that have been mentioned have been rather good IMHO, sure ht's not Jerry Goldsmith or Hans Zimmer... Jerry Goldsmith OR Hans Zimmer - Ouch. We all know you HAVE TO BE the industry's buttlicker numero uno, because you want to produce albums, you need their cooperation. It's perfectly understandable. Just, sometimes, you're carrying it too far. Judged from his previous work, Tyler Bates has NO talent for film scoring. That he might be a nice guy doesn't enter into it. Bernard Herrmann OTOH wrote brilliant film music, yet, based on recorded evidence, he was also a huge prick.
