Windmill Records is pleased to announce the release of John Barry - The Early Years. Although only a couple of the 36 tracks are film music-related, there are 12 John Barry compositions, including the various "Mood" tracks he recorded for the Chappell music library just before "Beat Girl". You can also enjoy three rare Barry compositions that he never recorded himself: "Easy Beat", the theme for a long-running BBC Radio show, "Moonbird", written for Penny Whistle specialist Des Lane, whom The John Barry Seven often accompanied on stage, and "Trouble Shooter", written for Bob Miller & The Millermen, some of whom previously featured on the Beat Girl album recording. John Barry's hand is in every track, either as a writer or arranger, and it's a chance to hear him experimenting as he gradually moved from the pop world to the film world. The CD is not a limited edition though it is unlikely that more than 1000 will be pressed. The CD can be purchased direct from Windmill Records via the following link: http://www.johnbarry.org.uk/tey.php

Played mine, for the first time, today. Very enjoyable stuff from the years just before Barry's big break through with 'The James Bond Theme' and the jazz club sequences in 'The L-Shaped Room'. Many thanks to Geoff Leonard and crew for this one!

Great to have these rarities with clean sound. How much of a challenge was arranging clearances and restoring the sound for the compilation? Simply marvelous to have all five Chappell Library tracks available. I had not heard Mood Four until now. I believe that these tracks in particular display JB's growing artistry and, along with the Beat Girl Main Title and Bees Knees show the roots of the James Bond theme. Congratulations to all. I hope it sells well. PS: Geoff it was good to finally meet you at the Memorial Concert in 2011. Stan

To be honest it was probably the easiest album to do in every respect. Knowing of a good man to d/w sound restoration for some tracks was a bonus, of course, but it was worlds apart from some of the TV theme albums I did some years ago, when you were dealing with half-a-dozen or more different companies, who all wanted advances against sales. Also back then, the creation of a booklet could be very complex, but things have moved on considerably in the technical sense, and you can now do everything on your own computer and upload the files to the manufacturer. Of course a soundtrack album would be the next logical step, but I know that is far from simple to get underway, and I admire those other labels who have achieved so much so far, a lot of it against the odds. If this album sells a few more copies I'll certainly be doing another, rest-assured!

I don't suppose you will give us all a hint of what might be next? Stan
