John Williams' score to THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE is probably the gold standard for "disaster" film scores. From the opening brass-and-string shudders that simulate the approaching tidal wave, through the crash that mirrors the wave hitting the ship, and the adventure theme that, with its succession of five-note rising figures signifying the trek upward and outward from the doomed ship, no score has captured in a classier, more stately way the best that genre of film had to offer.

THE TOWERING INFERNO-74-JOHN WILLIAM'S masterpiece, has everything that is needed in a film score, vibrant themes, pretty themes, melodic and memorable and a classic end credit overture.-THE HINDENBURG-75- DAVID SHIRE- Beautiful nice flowing score, spiritual when needed, shocking when needed. Yes, "The Towering Inferno" may the best disaster film score of all time. When I am looking for a full Williams fanfare blast for the highest inspiration, I don't turn to "Star Wars" or "Superman" first, but to the amazing Main Title thrills of "The Towering Inferno"! There are at least several other great disaster film scores that make for great listening adventures: "Titanic" - James Horner "The Hindenburg" - David Shire "Airport" - Alfred Newman "Earthquake" - John Williams "The Poseidon Adventure" - John Williams "Rollercoaster" - Lalo Schifrin "The Swarm" - Jerry Goldsmith "Sodom and Gomorrah" - Miklos Rozsa

@ DanTheMan - wouldn't THE MEDUSA TOUCH belong to Pretty Music in Horror and SciFi? THE CASSANDRA CROSSING 77 - Jerry Goldsmith - lovely and tuneful theme for infection riddled disaster flick.

TO ADVISE AND CONSENT- Well it's a tough call, yes you could say THE MEDUSA TOUCH is indeed , SCIFI HORROR, but it also plays out for sure near the end as a disaster film as well. For instance if you notice on the cd compilation on this thread, they list THE SWARM, that is surely HORROR SCIFI, but many feel it is a disaster film. Many times disaster and scifi overlap, at times so does horror as well. Also may I say MICHAEL J LEWIS score for MEDUSA was not really pretty music, but incredibly energetic and effective as hell. I would define , pretty and beautiful as music which is highly melodic and usually slower pace. But may I say what I always say TO EACH IT'S OWN, ONE CAN CALL IT, ANYWAY THEY WANT. Some critic once called THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN- A HORROR, SCIFI, COMEDY, ACTION, ADVENTURE, DRAMA.
