Career Retrospective of the 80 Year-Old Composer Includes Tracks From 3-Dozen Films, Jazz, Symphonic Compositions, and Unreleased Music
(October 3, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA) Aleph Records is proud to release Lalo Schifrin: My Life in Music, a four-CD boxed set of music from the legendary composer’s career in film, jazz, and classical music. The set features music from three-dozen films, jazz and symphonic pieces composed by Schifrin, and unreleased music from films including Charley Varrick, The Beguiled, Joe Kidd, and Coogan’s Bluff. Along with over five hours worth of music, a forty-eight page book is included with archival photos and notes.
Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) describes Lalo Schifrin as "… one of the greatest composers that's ever lived. He understands how to move an audience emotionally. There's nobody hipper than Lalo."

“Spanning fifty years of accomplishment, Lalo Schifrin: My Life in Music is a tapestry of diverse composition; a mosaic of tone and color, honed and shaped with the maestro’s precision,” said the set’s producer Nick Redman.
“I have been very fortunate in having the opportunity to compose music in the jazz, classical, and film/television genres during my career,” said Schifrin. “This box set is a very broad sampling of some of those works. It is an opportunity to share some well-known pieces and discover new music as well.”
This four-disc set spans music from all aspects of Mr. Schifrin’s career, from the early beginnings of his film music to the big hits that include Mission Impossible, Dirty Harry, Enter The Dragon, and Bullitt. Also represented is music from his jazz and classical compositions including work commissioned by Dizzy Gillespie, as well as the Grammy-nominated Jazz Meets The Symphony series.
His music is a synthesis of traditional and twentieth-century techniques, and his early love for jazz and rhythm are strong attributes of his style. “Invocations,” “Concerto for Double Bass,” “Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2,” “Pulsations,” “Tropicos,” “La Nouvelle Orleans,” and “Resonances” are examples of this tendency to juxtapose universal thoughts with a kind of elaborated primitivism. In the classical composition field, Schifrin has more than 60 works.
Schifrin has written over 100 film and television scores including Mission Impossible, Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, Amityville Horror, Enter The Dragon, four of the Dirty Harry films, and more recently Abominable and the Rush Hour trilogy. Lalo Schifrin has now won five Grammys® (twenty-two nominations), one Cable ACE Award, and six Academy Award® nominations.

Got mine from Amazon UK last week. The unreleased tracks - Joe Kidd, Coogan's Bluff, Charley Varrick, The Beguiled - sound really terrific, and are in stereo. Concorde: Airport 79 is from a live performance.
If Intrada's hinted-at November 27th CD is COOGAN's BLUFF, we're in for a treat.

My copy arrived from SAE today, and overall it's a great Schifrin compilation that provides an overview of the composers classic scores mixed with more obscure items. Some comments by disc:
DISC 1
1. Enter The Dragon – Main Title (uses the original film version w/o the yells which I almost wish
they had included as I've gotten so used to them by now.)
6. Fast Walking– Main Title (interesting, flip theme for this obscure James Woods film)
8. Invisible City -- from Metamorphosis: Jazz Meets The Symphony #4 (nice cinematic concert piece)
17. Charley Varrick -- Bank Robbery -- (Nice to have unreleased track, will have another more
downbeat comment about Varrick track on disc 3)
19. Coogan's Bluff – Main Title -- (Hope Intrada will gift us with this Monday night, but great to have.)
DISC 2
1. Joe Kidd – Main Title -- (another fine previously unreleased gem from the 70's)
10. The Cincinnati Kid -- Instrumental Version (Lalo Schifrin, piano) (nice concert arrangement)
12. The Beguiled -- Amputation Aftermath (more avant garde cue from Eastwood flop)
19. Coogan’s Bluff -- Take Me to Ringerman -- (fine action cue from COOGAN)

4. The Fourth Protocol – Main Title (gonna have to have this one grow on me, not a favorite)

Redman had tried to create a mini-suite by using
beautiful opening montage sequence music, then
going into this final cue from the film and end title.
Hopefully, Intrada will remedy this lack someday.)

1. Concorde: Airport 79 -- Suite (stirring concert suite from Schifrin score recorded live)
8. Intersections -- from Intersections: Jazz Meets The Symphony #5
(Hadn't been familiar with this but recognize it's beginnings in the "pocket-picking montage" in
HARRY IN YOUR POCKET.)
Can't resist saying that I miss the graphic treatment Joe Sikoryak would have given this package, and that a track by track commentary would have been welcome. As they stand, the notes (by John Burlingame) are geared more to a general audience than film music fanatics such as ourselves.
In any case, I still think it's a fine Schifrin package that I look forward to listening to on long car trips.

Hi Vinylscrubber--
just wanted to comment on the two tracks you seem most disappointed with --
1) we could only license one cue from WB for Rage, and we felt it more suitable to provide the unreleased Main Title, which is substantial, rather than the short group of "Americana" pieces that precede it. Given we could only have one cut, it would have meant including only one of those brief segments.
2) with regard to Charley Varrick, in an earlier draft of the set we had included the Main Title, but upon listening to it, Lalo decided against its inclusion as he felt it "was not representative of the score as a whole." We substituted Last of the Independents, a terrific climactic action cue in its place--especially as the soaring orchestral second-half is unused in the film, and thus had never been heard before.

Without breaking any confidences, I can assure you that a least a couple of those titles will be coming in the not-so-distant future--in fact I turned in the liner notes for one of them just yesterday. Those of us who are committed to Lalo's catalogue would love to see all his unreleased gems come to light one day. Here's hoping it turns out that way.

Having had a week to live with this set, I have to say I have been enjoying it immensely.
Developing some affection for the "Intersection" cut, I dug out my Quartet disc of HARRY IN YOUR POCKET, only to find I was wrong in thinking "Intersection" was derived from a cue in that score. It's nowhere to be found, but I know I've heard some form of this in some score by Schifrin. Could anybody help me out here?
I've also developed more affection for THE FOURTH PROTOCALL.
This set reminds one of the wonderful breadth of Schifrin's talent and how much I miss his voice in film music. Thanks again for all those involved in making this set a reality.
(And getting the complete COOGAN'S BLUFF in the same week is sheer joy.)

Jkannry, you're right. And this is especially true now that I've hit the big SIX FIVE, age-wise. It just bugs me that that I HAVE heard this somewhere and I can't say where. ( I tell my friends that I used to be able to take on my whole former company single-handed in Trivial Pursuits: Silver Screen, and now I wouldn't dream of doing that.)
I still take much heart from Nick's post above that more Schifrin is coming.

This is a marvelous set and I'm glad I purchased it. Sure, I musta had 95% of it all before, but just listening to the discs as long-unheard items unfold on your ears is terrific fun. The man's a genius!

How informative is the enclosed booklet?
It's about 25 pages with an introduction by Nick Redman and a decent essay by Jon Burlingame (both of whom are good guys!) But most of all there a loads of photographs of Lalo from throughout his career. All good.
