This question of course is address to the men as well as the women on this board, but it would be nice to hear from some ladies with this question, How come and why do you feel we don't get alot of women on a board like this?

There are a number of women who are regular posters here. That said, film score collecting as a niche market does seem to appeal primarily to men. One theory has it that men are more likely to be of the obsessive/fanatic mindset involved in this and related forms of geekery. smile Also the occasionally rampant objectification and misogyny that pops up around here probably doesn't always make this the most welcoming place to women.

Film music is a sausage fest, didn't you know that?

To Mastadge-Yes i agree with your point of fanatic interest which in all aspects of life seem to be more prevelant with males, be it, baseball cards. automobiles, comics, stamps you name it, women seem to take [past of course their working careers] interests in life things more in a slower pace, but then one may ask why is that.maybe part of the reason and differences of the male brain and female brain, but is this really true or just a wrong assumption, any comments from the ladies here?

Silly me. I thought this thread was going to be about female film music composers.

My wife lurks but does not post. She is responsible for bringing home many of the great soundtracks we have.

I have seen the way female posters have been treated on other film score boards...and quite frankly some of it made me embarassed to belong to the same species as the people who were posting. Unbelievable behaviour. That said, off the top of my head I can think of 3 women on popular film music boards who have forgotten more than I will ever know about movie music....they just get treated like shit. Which is a shame.

That is a shame, if true. But I think our Lovely Ladies of the Board are treated with respect and deference.

To Josh- Weeks back i had a thread on female composers and it was going good but it vanished in the night, no i meant this thread to deal with Female film music fans and why don't we have more then we do, i think Mastadge might be partially right, females seem to do things more quietly when it comes to there interest, plenty woman i know enjoy music from films but not to the point of getting really into it, alot like woman who love Horror films[plenty of them ] but they are not really pro active with it.

Women are by nature quieter than men. It's one of those things that just is.

One look at how obsessive most of us are and they took off running in the opposite direction! big grin

I'd still pay good money for a "Ladies of FSM" 12-month calendar. wink

I'm sure we can make room for a David or two, maybe get Eric Paddon. Of course, Bruce Kimmel must recreate a scene from The First Nudie Musical for a month! big grin

“…misogyny that pops up here…” You think?

We’ve had several topics about why so many more men collect film scores than women.
We’ve speculated that females tend to like music with lyrics more than music without
lyrics. Hmmm, I know many women who like classical music and play in orchestras, but
I don’t have any female friends who are aware of film scores.

Maybe being raised near nuclear power plants made my brain mutate. Since I was in my
teens, my favorite music has been film scores. I notice scores in movies, and my husband
is oblivious to film music. I can think of about 5 to 8 women on this board, so we are “the
few,” but we’re a mighty few. I was raised in a home with lots of music playing, classical,
modern, and musicals. My brother brought home a few LP film scores which totally hooked
me. I still don’t know why my ears lean towards Bernstein, Goldsmith, A. Newman, Morricone,
and too many others to mention.

But I’m glad to be Odd Woman Out. Loving film scores is a magnificent obsession!

I think it's more that men are more into 'collector' type hobbies as a rule. Many women probably like some scores (I met one who loved Dracula and some others....though granted she seemed to buy that for the Annie Lennox song) but they aren't going to be into the aspect of buying a lot of music, period. It's hardly something that's a film score thing, pretty much any message board on the Internet devoted to anything traditionally geeky will be that way. Hell just think about the stereotype of the man as the packrat who doesn't want his wife to sell his 'old junk' at a garage sale. There's a reason such stereotypes exist.
Obviously you have exceptions like Joan here, but even My Little Pony has attracted a much more male presence than female one.

Yet another dan the man topic that has been discussed extensively in the past, and since I don't feel like copy/pasting what I wrote, here are a couple of links:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=47010&forumID=1&archive=0 (my own)

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=2295&forumID=1&archive=1

There are also several on the whole 'women as film composers' topic.

As I stated on my previous and first post I am just a film music lover and the reason I don't post is nothing to do with being a woman : it's simply I don't feel having much interesting thoughts to share about music, so I really enjoy myself reading some very interesting posts in which I learn a lot.
And I am not sure that " it's more that men are more into 'collector' type hobbies as a rule" : doesn't collecting shoes, handbags or sweatshirts count ? [JOKE]
I have some girl friends fond of film music who may also feel not enough scholar to post here but we often exchange info regarding up-comming releases and talk about film scores [a colleague of mine often hum the "Airport" theme, which is not very reassuring !].
I don't remember the case of women posters being insulted... But I will never forget the very first thread I read, maybe a decade ago, about two guys arguing which of Victor Young's"Around the World in 80 Days" or Les Baxter's"Master of the World" was the best score. They both eventually began calling each other names, including mothers' ones, which was both hilarious and then pathetic. So I do understand some people at this time being reluctant to join the board. And in the past days there was this thread about the "highest CD cost" which ended sadly.
The only reason I joined the board recently was to thank Lukas Kendall for the wonderful job he has done. I felt this was important to say. But I know that if I have any question or concern I will receive wonderful and scholar answers !

Cheers,

Eva Ljungström
