Does anyone have CHRISTUS APOLLO by Goldsmith? I've never heard of it before finding it on Amazon so I'm curious what it is about. Is it a classical piece or from a film? What year was it composed? Thanks.

Well, you all know by now that Goldsmith is my FAVORITE, but when I heard Christus Apollo on that boot a few years ago, I thought, "SHIT! This SUCKS!!" There is only ONE other Goldsmith composition that I feel this way about... not bad considering how much he has composed!!!

Please drop the other shoe, Jim. What's that other Goldsmith work?

I think it's Goldsmith's magnum opus. Blends the impressionistic with the liturgical in a particularly striking way. NP: Moon Over Parador (Jarre)

OBVIOUSLY there wasn't much love for Jerry Goldsmith's "Christus Apollo." But last night I wanted to check out my surround system and put on the SACD (which is a CD hybrid) from Telarc with Goldsmith conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, and while I still am not in love with it, I enjoyed the 2 instrumental pieces that are bookends for it, "Music For Orchestra," and, especially, "Fireworks." They are each more than 8 minutes of excitement and I'm glad to have them ("Fireworks" seems to have an Elmer Bernstein panoramic sweep to it). But with this posting dying in 2002, and the same for another on this recording, it doesn't look like anyone here had much interest in any of this music by Jerry Goldsmith.

Erik: Great! Glad someone is keeping this music alive! Follow-Up: I tried to listen to the program, and while it sounded terrific, it kept cutting out after about 20 seconds, and then, after a 5 or 6 second pause, start back up again. It happened repeatedly with part 3 and also when I tried part 1. What was I doing wrong?

The Telearc is a superb release.

Erik: The second time was the charm! And your program is a delight! I'm into the 2nd violin concerto of Lee Holdridge, and would have come back here earlier, but was afraid that I was going to be disconnected from your program, but, happily, it goes on! It would be perfect for listening to on my iPod while I'm out and about. Any podcasts? Thanks for alerting us to this! http://www.cinematicsound.net/concert-music-by-film-composers/

But with this posting dying in 2002, and the same for another on this recording, it doesn't look like anyone here had much interest in any of this music by Jerry Goldsmith. I played "Music For Orchestra" on my show last week. http://www.cinematicsound.net/concert-music-by-film-composers/ It's a great piece. Arguably one of the most personal pieces of Goldsmith's career. -Erik- I hope you can do a next session with concert classical music by Don Davis, Philippe Sarde, Rosenman, Morricone, Williams, Korngold, Rozsa, etc. etc. included even Horner (I' ve once read he composed a double concerto for violin and cello).
