A film music celebration like no other!

Never has there been as elaborate a production of a single film score in all of film music history.

SPARTACUS is here!

6 CDs ... 1 DVD ... a deluxe 168-page book!!

Alex North is the father of modern film music - an inspiration and a hero to the generations that followed him.

"For those of us coming of age in the 1950s, and seriously interested in film music, Alex North was an inspiration, a role model and a hero. He was then and he remains so today." - John Williams

Jerry Goldsmith himself put it very succinctly, when speaking of Alex:

"Of all of us, he's the master."

Varèse Sarabande commemorates Alex North's 100th birthday and the film Spartacus' 50th Anniversary with the release of Robert Townson's 1,000th album.

For this international celebration of one of film music's most influential and important giants, Robert Townson is joined by:

Nathan Barr
Alan and Marilyn Bergman
John Debney
Alexandre Desplat
Patrick Doyle
Randy Edelman
Dave Grusin
Mark Isham
John Mauceri
Joel McNeely
Diego Navarro
David Newman
Lisbeth Scott

This is, by far, the grandest release in Varèse Sarabande's history.

Never have I been more proud of any project with which I have been involved and, frankly, I never dreamed that my promise to Alex, that one day I would restore and release his masterpiece, ever could have resulted in something so grand. - Robert Townson

This DVD presents a series of conversations about Alex North and the score of SPARTACUS

Rather than approaching our on-camera discussions like a conventional documentary - with film clips, photos, and underscoring - we felt that it would be much more interesting to simply let these composers talk, expressing their own enthusiasm for Alex North's work. To that end, the interviews are organized thematically but presented in their raw state, offering the experience of sitting across from these great musicians.

The interviews were filmed on March 5, 15 and April 6, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

Featuring interviews with

Alexandre Desplat
Mark Isham
David Newman
Lalo Schifrin
Robert Townson
Brian Tyler
John Williams
Christopher Young

Bonus Features:
Recording Spartacus Love Theme with

Mark Isham
Diego Navarro

My train went through a tunnel at exactly 8am BST so I've seen it 5 minutes later than the rest of you.

Impressive...is my 1st reaction

I think the price is extraordinarily reasonable considering the discs, the hardcover book and the OST score proper. This has been a fan's dream for decades.

I'm delighted that he had the good taste to include the Bill Evans version - probably my favorite recorded track of all time.

I just purchased it, so only 4,999 to go.

Yes and I wouldn't mind paying that amount for one of my holy grails, but it is pricey considering it's one score and it's meant as a celebration (you'd think they make a really special offer). I do like all the work that went into it but it's still 18 $ a disc which will mean it will be around for quite some time.

The only question is: What will fans start demanding the release of now? smile
