I am on a Barry binge today and pulled this one out. Such a nice score with a bit of jazz and lovely Barry touches. It's a very easy listen on a snowy day.

I like it also.
But Fat Boy Failure Weinstein rejected many cues of Barry and even brought in Chris Young to Pep things up..Young told the producers that he could write anything better than Barry’s music. So many cues are gone of Barry’s..maybe they are on Eternal Echoes..who knows...
But I do like the slow pace of Barry’s music..it fits the film perfect.
Far as I know, most of what Barry wrote for the film is on the CD. I believe only one or two Barry pieces survived in the film unfortunately, though I've never seen it.

It's a lovely film ... so good you hardly notice the raucous soundtrack used, often, as source. It's been some time since my last viewing and I can't recall just how much of John Barry's score survived but, whatever, the album is superb. It's very much a late evening work for me and the finale Vows remembered is downright gorgeous ... so moving.
From what I remember of the film, only 2 or 3 brief Barry cues survive. One short, sad cue in a hospital, and a portion of the big finale cue, and maybe one other. All the other cues are from Young's replacement score, but the film is dominated by pop songs and source music either way. Luckily the score album has what I presume is Barry's complete score. The soundtrack album also has two suites of music from Barry which are, I'm fairly sure, different recordings from the score tracks.
Playing By Heart is a gorgeous work by Barry. His penultimate score. He conducted part of it at his 1999 Birmingham and Royal Albert Hall concerts with Chris Botti on trumpet. This score could only enhance the film but Weinstein and/ or some others connected to the movie were clueless.
I played this gem again today. I swear I could play it 2-3 times in a row and not tire of it. It's easily climbing up my list of favorites. The family heard a bit of it and truly liked it. I call that progress.
In your original post you reference that it was a good listen for a snowy day. Your post today catches my hometown in the biggest snowstorm it has seen in five years . . . as if I need an excuse to play some John Barry.

I hope you are safe and cozy and surrounded by Barry. We have skated by (not literally) the snow and ice thus far. New England winters can be brutal. Usually the lake we live on has a decent coating of ice on it. It is just starting to freeze up but I won't hold my breath much longer. We will get that snow I am sure. It is really cold here today.
