With the centenary of the First World War been marked today, I went off and searched for scores from films relating to WW1. To my surprise I only found, The Blue Max, Lawrence of Arabia, Joyeux Noel, A Very Long Engagement, War Horse, Passchendaele and Flyboys. Am I missing any? Anybody have a favourite score/cue from a WW1 film?

Well apart from those above, there's 'Oh, What a Lovely War' and some documentary scores, like Morton Gould's 'World War I' and Wilfred Josephs' unreleased 'The Great War'.

And Friedhofer's 'Richthofen and Brown'.

'Aces High'? Plus stuff like 'Zeppelin'. And ball-park scores such as 'Doctor Zhivago', 'Ryan's Daughter' and 'The Go-Between' which all touch on the war, as did 'The Shooting Party'.

As regards faves it has to be 'Blue Max' and 'Lawrence'.

Does a WWI-plotted movie have to have actual battle scenes to be considered a WWI movie?

Additional films, all of which have elements of WWI in them, either directly or indirectly---and most with soundtrack releases.....

WHAT PRICE GLORY (1952)
RANDOM HARVEST (1942)
YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942)
DARLING LILI (1970)
SHOUT AT THE DEVIL (1976)
FOR ME AND MY GAL (1942)
NIGHT AND DAY (1946).....[no soundtrack, yet]
WATERLOO BRIDGE (1940).....[no soundtrack, yet]
WILSON (1944)

and, of course, lots of Hemingway, with flashbacks or plot incidents
including.....

THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO (1952)
THE SUN ALSO RISES (1957)
FAREWELL TO ARMS (1957)

I just don't know why this score has never been released, Wilfred ('I Claudius') Josephs' 'The Great War'. I've linked it here before... see the title music at the beginning of this sequence:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHm7fNDDY9Y

And this very different 'March Glorious' was used as the end credit music to the last episode and in some sequences. Actually, this is a reduced orchestration version for smaller grouping, the original is amazing, and builds up symphonically (Miklos Rozsa would have approved) to a hysteria as Europe goes off to madness:

http://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=Wilfred+Josephs+March+Glorious+(Theme+from+The+Great+War)

(I'm hoping 'Grooveshark' is legit: I really don't know, it was the only place I could find the piece).

I'm still wishing for a release of Frederic Talgorn's score for the battle of the Somme episode of Young Indiana Jones. I wasn't a huge fan of the series but that music really kicked.

And don't overlook Stanislas Syrewicz's enjoyable score (ignoring the awful rock tracks) to that great, fun film: Biggles (1986)

Carl Davis did music for THE BIG PARADE (1925), a few cues of which appear on some compilation albums.

Then there is Max Steiner's music for THE LOST PATROL (1934). About 38 min. appears on the set "Max Steiner: The RKO Years 1929-1936."

The Silva Screen compilation set "Hollywood Goes To War" has music from PATHS OF GLORY and SERGEANT YORK.

The television soundtrack for "Parade's End" by Dirk Brossé (Varese/Colosseum 2012). Wonderful from start to finish!

I just don't know why this score has never been released, Wilfred ('I Claudius') Josephs' 'The Great War'
I second that. But maybe there just wasn't enough original music in the series to justify a release - the oft repeated segment from Schostakovich's 11th Symphony was used very well, as was the Vaughan Williams 7th.
But I'd dearly love to know if the intro music to the warfare at sea episode was by Josephs - it's a marvelously subtle and clever pastiche of Stanford's music about the British Navy. Overlaid with Redgrave's tragically sonorous tones reading from Henry V, I find effect totally breathtaking - a perfect synthesis of words, music and images.
As for original WW1 movie scores, The Blue Max and Lawrence are for me the most outstanding with the Max ultimately the more satisfying listening experience.
