This film, book and score had such an impact on me when it came out and I was only 17 at the time. same here, i was just 12, i really liked the film (as I did almost every film at that age), but i loved the score, which i had on tape and played to death, and then i got so drawn into the book when i read it it kind of left the film behind for me, containing as it did such a finer detail of the life of young Ballard. I've grown apart from Spielberg's more serious films over the years - the embellishment that works well in his escapist fare i find ill-suited to realistic material, which I feel needs an emotional distance to resonate, but revisiting the score is something I've been anticipating for years now, it's sure to bring back a lot of memories.

Because of this announcement hopped over to amazon and just bought the Empire bluray. Says though US and Canada regions might have trouble playing it... anyone in the US have this? I'm assuming you mean the "Region 40443 encoding" gibberish currently below the price on the Amazon page. Pay no attention to that nonsense. There is no such thing as "Region 40443 encoding", that text is some sort of mistake. Empire of the Sun is from Warner Brothers, their Blu-Rays have always been region-free. You should have no problem playing whichever disc you bought (US or overseas) wherever you are.
