I have many friends who count Jerry Goldsmith as their favourite film music composer, and others for whom he features in their top echelon. I like few things better than poking a little fun at the hyperbole that's sometimes demonstrated here, and that'll probably carry on, because I mean no harm and, to be honest, I quite enjoy it.

However, I hope that 2014 brings you all that you'd wish for yourselves. I hope that Adrian Messenger finally makes the list, that Peter Proud gets his reincarnation, and that if there are any re-recordings in the pipeline, that they turn out well and that you get the pleasure of praising them in these pages. And I hope that the labels and producers make lots of money in the process.

Naturally, it'd be good if there were also lots of releases to satisfy those who, like me, have greater enthusiasm for other composers, but I'd be very happy if this coming year were remembered as a landmark one for Jerry Goldsmith fans.

All the best, guys

For Goldsmith, I 'm hoping Tadlow will re-record BLACK PATCH and FACE OF A FUGITIVE

and could we still this year get Elmer's TEN COMMANDMENTS? If not, 2014 for sure I'd think.

Not much else I'm clamoring for except, Lee Holdridges' FRENCH POSTCARDS score with extra CD containing all the French Versions of the American Songs appearing in the non-butchered Theatrical Release.

And Gerald Fried's TV-MINI SERIES score containing Bill Conti's Main Theme from NAPOLEON AND JOSEPHINE A LOVE STORY.

Then I can die a happy soundtrack nerd!

Next July will mark the sad 10th anniversary of Jerry Goldsmith's death.

Oh, how I miss Jerry Goldsmith! I miss even seeing his credit on the upcoming movie posters in what passes for theatre lobbies these days. What can I tell you. With my love of movies and of being into film soundtracks since I was around six (I was born in '59), this guy scored a large part of my life. It just hasn't been the same with me and current movies since he died.

Rory, as a fellow '59er, my Christmas wish for you is that the Academy start an award for posthumous film composers so that Goldsmith could have another crack at the whip. Although for 1968 I'd give it to Morricone for OUATITW!

Just for the record, the nominees for Best Original Score for a motion picture (not a musical) for 1968 were:

The Lion in Winter -- John Barry (Winner)
The Fox -- Lalo Schifrin
Planet of the Apes -- Jerry Goldsmith
The Shoes of the Fisherman -- Alex North
The Thomas Crown Affair -- Michel Legrand

Obviously, a lot of great scores didn't even get nominated that year, and I'd nominate OUATITW as one of the greatest scores EVER "not even nominated."

The Academy can take their awards and shove them where the sun doesn't shine, as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you Tallguy. Anyone who has Morricone as his second favorite composer has got to be a jolly good fellow!

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the good thoughts (and a positive thread). I will add the score to THE MAN to your wishlist.

Favourite film composer, second favourite composer! Your series on some of the more obscure Morricone scores should win some kind of award.

All the best, from a cold and windy (but mercifully dry) West Yorkshire!

took me a while to figure the title out... Isnt it easier just to write ONCE or WEST?

Just consider it a little Christmas guessing game from me.

You're welcome!

Wonderful sentiment, Chris!

I wonder if Jerry would've agreed. I can't help but picture Lois Carruth careening around his studio this time of year like Bob Cratchet.

Hi Mike - hope all's well in your little corner of the world and that Santa was good to you. As for my sentiments, I doubt whether Goldsmith would have been bothered either way!
