According to this article he is now immortal

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/oct/12/doctor-who-immortal-reveals-bbc

Wow, that's a cheap cop out! I read on other page suggestions of 12 times, 507 times, or the possibility exists he can "reset the clock" and get 12 new regenerations. As already noted, Doctor Who has never been more popular, they will rewrite their own rules so Who can continue on for another 50 years. wink

Can anyone answer this? I got in the last episode The Doctor doesn't actually know his own name. I thought he did? Has he been bluffing all this time? Didn't he at one point asked River how to pronounce it?

How would you surmise that he didn't know his own name in the season finale? I felt it was only a reluctance to say it, so River had to do it instead.

Yeah, my first read was he was stalling. But after that I thought at one point in time he says to River, I don't know how to pronounce it. He doesn't know how to pronounce what? I'm often confused, so I could be mistaken what he was talking about. Though when has he ever let his friends die if he could help it? I don't think he was stalling, I think he doesn't know. confused

When Clyde asks The Doctor how many times he can change, he states that he can change 507 times, contrary to the original twelve. Davies subsequently explained that the line was a joke.

@ johnjohnson - Thxs, so we can rule out that crazy number!

Don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere but it looks like the 2012 Christmas special will be released on DVD/BluRay shortly. Edit: May 28, 2013.

In my opinion it was the best episode of the series. (I consider this the first episode of the "Clara" series)

If (and it's a BIG if) theyare heading down the route of the whole original idea that started in Silver Nemesis, then the reason he can't pronounce it is because there are many different ways to say it.

I don't think the real "Name of the Doctor" will ever be (or indeed can ever be) spoken on-screen, if this is the case.

You know one thing that is hard to get used to (as an American) watching a UK program are the shots of Earth from space. All my life when ever there was a space shot of Earth, there was the America's. But when ever Doctor Who shows a shot of Earth from space there's the UK and neighboring areas.
It always throws me off for a second, because I am not seeing the America's!

The Bells of Saint John: A Prequel

I know this is "old" so to speak but I really love this short. Matt's acting in this scene, his body language, facial expressions, and dialect are superb. A perfect performance by an actor.

So - it's official - Matt Smith's Doctor will regenerate at the end of the 2013 Christmas Special - time for a new Who!

It's been on the cards for a while, but it doesn't surprise me.

This is terribly disappointing. I was not expecting this actually. Though I was disappointed when Tennant left, and was pleasantly surprised with Matt. So I will keep an open mind.

Edit: So what about Clara?

Wow - I didn't see that coming at all.

While I'll try and keep an open mind about any new Doctor, I'm very sad to hear about Matt's departure. His Doctor was, quite simply, a rare positive through a difficult time in my life.

As odd as this sounds, news of his departure is like losing a friend.

And I loved Murray Gold's theme for this Doctor. Will be sad to lose that too.

The minute I saw John Hurt at the end of the series billed as "The Doctor", I knew Matt was leaving. It was just a bit too obvious. John is no spring chicken, so there is just no time to wait in telling his story.

Now I do realize that he could be the so-called "missing regeneration" from before Christopher Eccleston, and we know David T is coming back for the Christmas episode as well. But given the larger darker nature of this direction, it just seemed likely no matter which regeneration Hurt is.

I love Matt Smith and will miss him. Despite not enjoying the majority of the stories from his tenure, I always enjoyed him, which makes him my favorite doctor of the new group.

I believe he is making a good choice and I wish him the best on his new path.

I'm sorry to hear about Smith's departure. Granted, I wasn't that keen on him in the first couple of seasons, but then he grew on me a bit (even though Tennant will always be "my" doctor). And so did Moffat's writing, in a way.

I just finished watching Patrick Troughton's stint on the show, and even though I didn't really connect with him either and the ending was kinda goofy, I still welled up a little bit when he left. So I'm guessing it will happen this time too (Tennant's departure was REALLY heartbreaking, of course).

Who knows who they will pick for the next who(!). I don't think John Hurt is the next doctor, Storyteller. He's just in it for the 50th anniversary, I gather.

Damn, that came out more rambling than I thought.

I loved David Tennant's stint as the Doctor. The part of his "finale" that reduced me to tears was his final line "I don't want to go"

But while it took a while for David Tennant to grow on me....Matt Smith had me from the word go.

David Tennant is "your" Doctor - a sentiment I completely understand. Matt Smith is "my Doctor". And I will be very sad to see him go.

Yes, that was incredibly powerful and -- in a way -- what made me finally embrace the DOCTOR WHO concept.

I miss David Tennant and I miss Russel T. Davies (both of whom I prefer over Smith and Moffat), but the renewal of artistic talent is part of what this is about, so I'm not going to wax nostalgic over past glories too much.

I think what made that so powerful for me was how...attached...I'd grown to David Tennant as The Doctor. I'd read about his decision to leave the series long before he left. That final line seemed (to me at least) both a salute to all of his fans and perhaps a last minute change of heart...that's what made it all the more powerful for me.

Oh dear :/ I really like Matt's take on the character and. I thought it was said that he would be staying on for the recently announced season 8.

So speculation can now begin on who we get next and who the doctor will pass (I'm going now for merging with a certain other character specifically John Hurt's Doctor.

Hopefully the next Doctor will finally be a woman.

Can the Doctor somehow make River Song a Time Lord?
