The Martian by Andy Weir. About a quarter to go, should finish it off this afternoon. It's about a man who's left on Mars (left for dead) when the crew has to make a quick exit, & how he survives. I haven't given anything away, this is all covered in the first couple of pages. It's a great read, I believe the author published it himself last year (electronic publishing), it was then taken up by a mainstream publisher & has become a best seller. Later this month Fox starts shooting the movie, Ridley Scott directing, it should be great if he doesn't muck it up. I'm intrigued, CinemaScope. When you are finished with the novel, please come back to this thread and share your comments, without giving away any spoilers, of course. This sounds like it could make an interesting film (with Scott on board.)

Dave, I will second the read of THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir. To tell you anymore than CinemaScope mentioned would be too much. Suffice to say it is a book that is hard to put down. It is an exciting read and will make a great movie if Scott does a good job with it. For verisimilitude, the author does employ a lot of science, and some of that science went right over my head, but I could follow most of it, and I had to keep reading. Three friends of mine, all guys, read it and loved it. My husband is almost finished with it and loves it. The lead in the movie is Matt Damon, which I think is a good choice.

Finally finished Vol. 5 of the GAME OF THRONES books. As usual, a cliffhanger ending, with a chapter of the next volume way at the end, just to whet our appetites for his next tome. What started out as an epic has become so meandering, and sometimes fogbound, that whatever pace it once seemed to have has dulled down to slowness. I do plan to read the next books in this series, but only because I'm more of a completist than I'd originally thought. Am now halfway through THE GOLDFINCH, by Donna Tartt. Surprised I can even read a book which takes place in a contemporary setting. (Often, what I enjoy are tales of ancient history; read the Stacy Schiff biography of CLEOPATRA, as well as a biography of Mithradates VI, king of Pontus, who ruled in the years just before the advent of Cleopatra's era. Love that stuff. Here's a vignette: Mithradates actually punished a greedy Roman governor, who had taxed the area into penury, but melting gold and having it poured down the man's throat. Shades of GAME OF THRONES!!!)
