In case you haven't heard this hoo-hah Jim, Tottenham, for many years, have had a large Jewish fanbase. Rival fans used to taunt them with songs featuring the word Yidd (short for Yiddish).
More recently, Tottenham fans have taken ownership of the word (much like many black men who use the N word about themselves to own it) chanting things like Yidd Army during games.
UK Politicians and Police have gotten involved and threatened to arrest ANYONE in the ground who shouts the word (I think there was an arrest on Sunday for such an act).

i think tott fans have been chanting Yid army since the late 70s, maybe before that.

But its just a nonsense that the handwringers bring it up like it started last week.

Rather more sinisterly, away fans at White Hart Lane have been known to make hissing noises to represent gas chambers. Although the banning of "Yid" chants sounds ridiculous in itself (and is) there's a bigger picture that the media doesn't seem to have mentioned in their eagerness to be offended.

Yes, the BBC Sport page had a piece on it. Much ado about nothing, though in the case of Italian racist chanting, I find that to be quite disgusting. It would be unheard of here for a match to be played "behind closed doors", like the AC Milan match apparently will be.

Does this mean the two sides will play in an empty stadium? That's insane!

It's happened on various occasions down the years, usually as an extreme punishment but it could also be because you're a lower league Scottish team.

And if you want to know what the atmosphere's like at a match played at an empty ground, dig out any video of a game played at Highbury. They didn't call it "The Library" for nothing!

I think a broader issue involving the use of the ‘Yid’ word is that Spurs supporters wearing it as a ‘badge of honour’ is going to incite other supporters to react to it. Rightly or wrongly, it’s human nature. Their continued use of it is going to attract political or religious comment. Personally I don’t find it offensive, but I think it’s in bad taste.
Prominent Spurs supporter David Baddiel has called on them to stop using it and I agree with him. It all reminds me of the time that right wing "journalist" Richard Littlejohn (!) said he was proud to hear it at matches and to see the Israeli Flag fly atop White Hart Lane. Much like what has happened to Baddiel recently, Littlejohn said anyone arguing against it is anti-semitic, which is an incendiary statement to my mind. And it’s also worth bearing in mind, that not all Spurs supporters going to games are indeed, Jewish.

its all such bollocks though isnt it. As if there arent more important things to worry about than words.

yes hammers played a euro tie behind closed doors after fan trouble in the 80s i think.Castillo or someone. I think there were 258 people there, journos etc. The way we have been playing there are some, of course, who would argue that we should be playing a lot more of our games behind closed doors!!

Except against er..tottenham. the whole world shoulda seen that one!! ha ha.

All thanks to the great tactical nous of Sam Alladerci! The man's a genius. He's good enough to manage Real Madrid. Let's just all forget the 'lump it forward, kick and hope' policy that he adopts every other week...

normally we dont lump it forward. kick and hope - without Carroll we dont have any system like that. Mostly we just well...lose the ball and press the opposition. Thats it. Forget goals. Except from corners. or the odd spurious handball penalty. If Opposition score then another 0 0 gameplan goes out the window!!

Yes, we can all watch 2 teams of mediocre standing in world football tonight. I keep hearing the hyperbole from the media that this is a 'must win' game for England. Er...except it isn't. A draw would be enough tonight, taking it for granted that they will easily beat Poland in the last game. A 'handy to win' game would be more like it. Especially if he picks that Townsend chap from Spurs, who is quite simply useless. For a winger, he can't even cross the bloody ball!!

Care to retract that comment? He was England's best and liveliest player!

jim, it was mostly dull, and laboured. At 1 nil they gave us a mad own goal to make it two.
got 1 back before the running of sturridge and welbeck unsettled them.
long distance sweetly struck bendr from townsend and then a penalty for a foul.
4-1 is better than 1-0 obviously but it seemed hardly a 4-1 difference.

i didnt watch whole match, just flashes.

Lions dont and havent roared since 1996.

Indeed. I may well eat a tiny slice of humble pie on that one.
I stand by my earlier remarks about how crap Kyle Walker is though.

Today, Mighty England face the challenge of Crafty Poland. Will the Three Lions triumph? There'll Always Be an England, but They Still Need to Qualify.

mmmm. Predicting football isnt sensible - especially on a board where your posts are there for ridicule five mins after the match is over!!

That said, the er Lions will probably win or do enough to get through - even though they are more akin to maybe polecats or leopards. Sort of second division lions. Bar an own goal disaster or a Hart moment of madness, they should have enough regardless of the line- up.

But i for one will not be getting too enthusiastic about any chances in the tournament proper. We are knock out stage fodder. Should be on our shirts.

Diners, drive-ins and dives is on the Food network at the same time.
mite watch that. Or Storage hunters on Dave channel.
Ooh the agony of choice.
