So I guess everyone won who was expected to win. Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG...even Manchester City dominated today.

Cristiano Ronaldo's third goal was a thing of beauty. His footwork was extraordinary. smile

Man U's first goal was another one for the conspiracy theorists... good control of an awkward shot by Rooney, but there was a Man U player on the goal line, not only impeding the keeper but actually pushing him into the back of the net by falling into him and neither the offside nor the foul were spotted by any of the four officials. Or if spotted, not given.

How blatant does it need to be?

It's always incredible what United get at Old Stratford, TG. Never be surprised. Ronaldo's hat-trick goal was good, but the Galatasaray players had long given up by then. I was impressed by Madrid last night however. They have a good squad now, and will only improve. It will be interesting to see if they can keep Bale fit.

Exciting day in the Champions League. Napoli shocks Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and FC Basel upends Chelsea 2-1. Hey look, Arsenal won, too! 2-1 over Marseille.

Saw some of the basel game. theyre are no mugs as they proved last year. 3 very good front men.
Not a surprise they nicked a result from chelsea. Mourinho is tinkering, doesnt know best team yet, doesnt have an inform striker and they dont have a focal point.Against ordinary prem teams theyre fine but against form teams theyre a bit wanting.

Typical arsenal. they beat easier prem and CL opposition and pretend all is well. up against the better sides they will struggle.

Leeds lost to a late winner. 7 mins of injury time? think someone was carried off so that probably accounts for that.
will wait for the TG match report.

By the way jim, messi hatrick looked a bit special.

I felt sorry for Celtic last night. For 80 minutes, I thought they were the better team but just unable to take their chances as their striking options are limited. Milan were lucky with their first goal, and overall looked extremely poor.

Interesting how the hatreds remain intact when one's league rivals are in tournaments. The U.S. is different in that regard. I hold no love for Chelsea but I always root for the England-based clubs in these things.

Speaking of Chelsea, they are like the England national team; several excellent players but they don't gel at all as a team. You'd think a side with the likes of Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o would kick some tournament backside but they really haven't played that long together and Mourinho doesn't know a lot of his players yet. I think once Basel equalized they were content; getting the winner was pure luxury.

You need to realise that some English football rivalry goes back many generations, even 100 years in some cases. It can be based on political or cultural differences, class structure (less so now), North/South divides, and the fiercest can be fought by geographical proximity. It's what has made football in England unique through the years, rightly or wrongly. It's a country that has a deep rooted history in the sport which is of huge importance to the supporters of clubs, which few other countries can testify to.

Okay Thomas (and Kev) and Bill...the 2006 FA Cup final...is there a rivalry between these clubs?

jim why did you have to bring that up. thats cruel.
west ham fans still feel aggrieved that in the last few mins they ( liverpool) rather meanly closed down a throw after it had been put out for fair play. I cant remember exactly as id put the match in a recycling bin called painful memories.

once theyd equalised it was obvious we would lose the cup.

I wasnt a big fan of liverpool in the 80s purely because they were just too good and devoured everyone with relentlessly boring ease. They were like the crablogger in Thunderbirds - crushing everything in its path.

But unlike most united fans Liverpool fans tend to know their football and are magnanamous in defeat and have been known to clap victors off the park even if their own team has been beaten well. thats rare.

Hillsborough also changed the map.

If anything theyve had a hard time since early 90s as United arsenal and chelsea have dominated. thats tough to take when you were once favourites for everything, even tournaments they werent in!!

Leeds won the championship in 1969 by taking a point in a 0-0 draw at Anfield. The Liverpool fans joined in with the travelling Leeds fans in chanting "champions" as the Leeds players took a lap of honour. Those of us of a certain age have never forgotten that.

Speaking of Liverpool, we've yet to read anything from the residents of this thread about Jamie Carragher's retirement. You'd think a player of his calibre would warrant at least some nod from the club's supporters (that means you Thomas and Kev!) in this thread. I'm sure you all know just how rare it is for a player to spend his entire career at one team.

Carragher made me laugh the other day on Sky. To ex-full back Gary Neville he said "I dont understand why anyone wants to be a full back. No kid dreams of being a full back! They are frustrated centre halves who cant get a game there or frustrated wingers who arent good enough!"

Probably not far wrong.

The funny thing with Carra was that he used to get slaughtered by the Liverpool fans in his early days. As a local lad, the fans had no qualms in bashing him for a mis-placed pass or wrong tackle, over higher rated foreign players who couldn't give a shit about the shirt.
In his younger days, what he lacked in footballing ability he tried to make up for in passion and commitment. But some fans just didn't rate him and would bollock him relentlessly.
It was only over the years, as his loyalty, enthusiasm and love for the shirt finally won everybody over, that he finally got some recognition (and his song, to the tune of Yellow Submarine, We All Dream Of A Team Of Carraghers).
I think that 1 club player will soon be a thing of the past. We've been lucky to have him AND Gerrard over the past decade to keep our head above water, during these leaner times for a LFC fan smile
