Why is the person on the cell phone near you always the one doing the talking, and never the listening?

I often see people wandering around with cell phones glued to their ear, but they're not talking. Exactly what or who are they listening to?

Or finishing their drinks? Hell, or taking a second sip?

Shouldn't you also italicize that question mark, for emphasis?

In the long, stupid tradition of computers blowing up when confronted with a question they don't like or can't answer--see Star Trek, Logan's Run, etc.

Why doesn't the future city of Logan's Run have a computer that simply responds "Well whaddaya know?" instead of exploding as if it's filled with gasoline?
