erik: That's interesting! Kinda reminds me of the after shows they used to have for "Breaking Bad" and for "Living Dead," which I stopped watching in the middle of its 2nd season, and the after-the-show interviews they have following each episode of MTV's "Teen Wolf." Would really like to see something like that for "Downton," but I don't think they don't have such a program here in Southern California.

CH-CD: Re your inquiry about any "Mr. Selfridge" fans. I watched the first season and sort of enjoyed it, but was sorry to see that the young artist played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen doesn't seem to be in the 2nd season -- he's probably too busy with NBC's "Dracula."
As for Donna's fear of spoilers, that's always a risk after something has been released on video. I've seen it all on my Blu-ray set that arrived 4 days ago, but have gone out of my way to not discuss anything that could spoil it for unsuspecting viewers, and would hope that if anyone wants to discuss salient points of the current season that they mark them as spoilers -- to those unfamiliar with that feature, just go to the left to Special Code Legend and you'll find that you type bracket spoiler close bracket and later, bracket slash spoiler close bracket. We certainly don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment of this series.

So glad to have switched over to the Blu-rays, once they arrived. We finished Season 4 in record time. Happy to report that the season recovers after it's awful first 3 or so episodes. I like the new guys, particularly Julian Ovenden, whom I liked since seeing him in the small role of nephew Fred in the Kelsey Grammer musical adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Lady Mary and Cousin Isobel remain my favorite characters on the show.

I'm currently enjoying Series: 2 here.
If you haven't seen it, it's sort of a "Downton Abbey" meets "Are You Being Served?"......but, without the comedy sales aids !
Enjoyed the first season, but was sorry to hear that Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who played the artist in love with Selfridge's wife, probably won't be back.

Ron H., the version you saw of the final episode was 2 hours 45 minutes? It's only 1 hour 39m. on the DVD I watched. Weird.
I'm amused by how people refer with horror to DA as a soap, and that it's no longer as good as it was in the good old days. People have been complaining that it's going downhill ever since the start of season 2, lol. Sure, it's soap. Witty, intelligent, enthralling soap, yes, but it's an entertaining melodrama/historical romance as well. To me, the quality has been consistent for all four seasons.
I have to say that I'm not happy with what seems to be the clear implication that Mr. Bates is capable of cold-blooded murder. He's my favorite character - there is darkness there, but great nobility and soulfulness as well.
I liked the relationship between Harold and Madeleine. I assume though that those characters are unique to the last episode, but I would like more. It will also to be fun to see what Rose gets up to in season 5. I wonder if Jack Ross will return.
I hope that Gillingham and Charles won't be Mary's only suitors now. Both are nice fellows, but a tad boring. I'd like to see at least someone else get in the mix.
Here is the burning question for season 5: Will we get to see what Miss Sarah Bunting actually looks like underneath that cloche hat of hers? I liked her at first, but she's gotten rather "naggy." And does Lord Grantham now suspect that she and Tom have been up to naughtiness at Downton thanks to Thomas' insinuations? Trouble afoot for our Irish lad?
I think my favorite Violet retort this season had to do with someone referring to someone (was it Molesley?) as "the younger," and the Countess sniffing, "Is he a Greek philosopher?" I need to find that bit and write it down correctly. It was very pithy.
Will Ivy really go to America? Will we see Alfred again? Will Daisy finally find romance? Will Gregson return? Will the smirk on Jimmy's face ever get wiped off? Will Rose be less of an airhead in time? And, again, did Bates really shove that a-hole into the street? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Mark: I noticed after posting that that I had actually watched the next to last episode AND the finale and had checked the time remaining at that point. Had meant to go back and correct that mistake when I realized it last Sunday, but didn't. Knew someone would catch me on it and now wish I had come back here to correct it as soon as I realized it. As for your comments, since it's such a serious crime (if Bates did indeed shove the bastard into traffic) I suspect the writers will finally reveal that Bates had been in town for something entirely unrelated to the rapist. Ms Bunting? Couldn't stand her the first time our Irish lad met her and have only grown to dislike her even more -- she had no business pressuring him to take her upstairs, and of course Thomas gleefully took advantage of it.

What was extremely disconcerting this was the time gap between the penultimate and final episode of the season.
Way too much happened in the one-week interval and all the characters are given lines to "catch us up", as it were.
Someone on another site revealed that he bought this season's set on Blu ray a couple of months back from the UK. He announced he had seen all the season's episode, including the Christmas episode.
Anyone have any idea what he meant? Was he joking? Or was there another of those "Christmas" episodes?
In the UK, there IS a gap of more than one week between Episode 8 and 9 of Season 4 ( as there was in previous Seasons).
The series "Proper" started here on Sunday, Sept. 22nd and ended, eight weeks later on Nov.10th.
The ninth and final episode is always held back here to be shown as the big Christmas Day night event. This is what is billed as the "Christmas Special".
That is why there is a "Time Lapse", as it is, more,or less, a stand-alone episode.
It is the final episode on the DVD set, or, can be bought separately.
Hope this clears things up ?
I don't think there are any spoilers in the text under the photo ( from last Christmas' Radio Times ), but, if you haven't finished watching the series, skip it, if you prefer.

I've never figured out (and may never) how to do the black out, so if you haven't finished
the finale, then just don't read anything below. I figured this discussion was about our current viewing.
Alert, spoilers ahead.
I was okay with this season. It wasn't the best, but it held my attention. The finale for me was onlyhours and 40 minutes followed by a tour of the castle where the real owners lived, and it was interesting.
I think in Season five, a lot of it will revolve around Lady Edith's secret child and trying to keep it a secret. I always thought Michael, her lover who went to Germany, was a bit slimy, and I think he'll resurface next season. I'm not sure that he ever planned on getting a divorce.
I always thought that Mary was one of the key players, but I was a bit disappointed in her this year. Except for the "pig" scene which was meant to humanize her a bit, I found her rather shallow throughout the season.
The finale certainly had key scenes in London, elegant costumes and a fancy ball. It had a lot of glitz, but I'm hoping for more substance next year.. I'm still a hooked fan.

It's pretty simple. Go to the space before what you want to black out, type in a bracket then the word spoiler then close bracket.
Then go to where you want to END the blackout and type bracket then a slash and spoiler and close bracket. Try it a few times. I know you'll easily get the hang of it. Or you can pretend that you are replying to someone with spoilers in their text and then easily see how they did it. For example, if you pretend to reply to this you'll see how I did this:
