Forecast is for rain on Days 4 and 5

Rain? Makes me wonder why they even bother with cricket in Australia with all that bad weather!

Stumps on day two and Australia had the better of it. Malan and Bairstow batted on for the first hour, Bairstow claiming a century, reaching 368/4. But then the wickets tumbled and England lost their last six wickets for a feeble 35 runs, finishing 403 all out. England's tail has been very weak on this tour.

Australia are in a very good position at 203/3. Overton got Warner and Bancroft out, but Khawaja was dropped twice, on 0 and 26, before Woakes got him LBW for 50. Captain Smith is still there on 92 not out. Overton had to leave the field injured. Broad bowled poorly.

On the plus side, England have a lead of 200, but they need to make it count by taking wickets early doors tomorrow.
It may be a moot point if the predicted thunderstorms arrive on Days 4 and 5.

England's tail don't seem to be able to cope with the Aussie pace bowling. Didn't take them long to get through it. Wouldn't surprise me if Smith leads the Aussies to a first innings lead now.

If that happens, we'll be praying for rain.

Interesting how England's stalwarts have let us down so badly this tour. Cook and Root have been poor, Broad and Moeen have been innocuous... Anderson's been OK but aside from his fivefer at Adelaide, not very threatening.

300+ fifth wicket stand, 150-ish ahead with 6 wickets standing. Rain dance, anyone?

Watched day two highlights as I'm back in Blighty for Christmas but just saw the results after Day 3 - good lord they hammered us.

Same this morning!

Four wickets down, miles behind and on cue the rain intervenes...

Is this the last test to be played at the WACA? Are they thinking of playing ashes tests in Hobart?

England have work to do, just to avoid an innings defeat. Poor from the top order on a relatively flat wicket.

Last Test at the WACA yes. Dunno where they go from there.

England look dead in the water. Only rain can save them now. They are four down but lost 6/35 in their first innings. I dread to think what will happen to those six wickets on a day five pitch.

The Aussies only need an hour of dry weather to bowl them out.

There are only five teams who have batted first, scored 400 and lost by an innings. Two of those were England in India last year.

The only crumbs of hope: same batsmen at the crease who put on the biggest partnership of the series so far, and the poor forecast for tomorrow.

I expected Cook's failures but what's happened to Joe Root? He had a poor tour here last time and was dropped. He's having a mare this time, too.

Broad's figures of 142-0, diabolical.

Surely can't go with the same 11 at Melbourne.

It's sad to say but the last six wickets collapsed quickly again. It's all too predictable.

There have to be changes for Boxing Day in Melbourne. Frustratingly the England Lion touring team have gone home so the only other players available for selection are Gary Ballance, Jake Ball, Tom Curran, Ben Foakes, Mason Crane and Mark Wood.

Mark Wood is the only pure pace bowler so he has to play. Ali's spin bowling has been dire so time to give Mason Crane a chance. That weakens the batting on paper but Ali has contributed nothing with the bat in Australia. Bowling allrounder Tom Curran to replace the misfiring Broad. I'd keep Woakes.

The only batsman left is Gary Ballance. I'm not a fan but someone in that top order has to drop out. I'd move Root and Malan up a spot and put Ballance at 5.

Cook, Stoneman, Root, Malan, Ballance, Bairstow, Curran, Woakes, Wood, Anderson, Crane.

Moving away from the Ashes:

AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn have returned to South Africa's Test squad for the inaugural four-day, day-night Test against Zimbabwe, which starts on Boxing Day in Port Elizabeth. De Villiers last played a Test in January 2016, while Steyn has not played international cricket after suffering a shoulder injury in Perth last year.

The duo were joined in the squad by Morne Morkel, who has recovered from a side strain that has sidelined him since late October, and Vernon Philander, who is fully fit after a back problem sustained in England. Captain Faf du Plessis, who is in the final stages of recovery from a shoulder operation, has also been named.

Nice to see De Villiers and Steyn back, two players who can light up the Test scene.

Mitchell Starc injured and replaced with Jackson Bird for the Fourth Test starting tomorrow.

Craig Overton also confirmed injured. Could be Wood, Crane, or Curran to replace him.

Fourth Test starts Christmas Day UK time 11:30pm.

If Bill is bored of Ashes talk he can always tune into Radio 2000 Johannesburg online Boxing Day for the return of Steyn and De Villiers in the SA Test against Zimbabwe. wink

Tom Curran will make his Test debut replacing Overton.

Only 22 years old. Was born in Cape Town! What is it with South Africans playing for England?!

He played in the last tour game in Perth, scoring 77 not out, and figures of 2/28 and 3/28.
