"The Great Vegetable Rebellion". Yep, LIS moved away from camp.

Obviously, not totally, but after the crash and burn of comedy in the second year, LiS did - initially - turn away from outright comedy and leaned more toward adventure. There was always comedy in LiS and after doing full frontal Smith, it was impossible to really go back. But for the most part, the accent was on adventure until they got kinda lazy again.

Condemned of Space, Visit to a Hostile Planet, Hunters Moon, Flight into the Future, Space Destructors, Space Creature, Target Earth, Anti-Matter Man, Deadliest of the Species, Anti-Matter Man, Kidnapped in Space, etc.

Either way - no bearing on Trek at all.

If you look carefully I believe you'll see some of those same dumb rubber LIS monster costumes changed a bit and recycled on Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Probably the same poor stunt guy inside swinging the arms around. And if you look even more carefully you'll see Basehart's eyes rolling back into his head as he wonders how the hell he even wound up on that show.

You didn't have to look that carefully. It was pretty obvious. A lot of those monsters originated on Voyage and were ported over to LiS. As for props and set pieces, that was common among the studios. Every Fox series seemed to use the Burroughs computer banks and even Batman and The Green Hornet swiped Irwin's props and costumes.

Basehart was paid a LOT of money to be on Voyage. He had an expensive divorce to fund and Voyage allowed him to do that. He admitted that Voyage was "okay some of the time" but he never really enjoyed it much.

Season two has four consecutive clunkers: The Gamesters of Triskelion; A Piece of the Action; The Immunity Syndrome; and A Private Little War (aside from Nancy Kovack, of course). There are numerous sub-par episodes strewn throughout the season, yet here I am, still watching the damned things (though it's been a couple years since I last watched TOS).

Gamesters is a lot of fun and has some fabulous action. I wouldn't call it a clunker.
A Piece of the Action: eh, I don't like comedy episodes and this is the least amusing.
The Immunity Syndrome is great. Far from a "clunker."
A Private Little War: outstanding. One of my favorites of the season.

A Piece of the Action was a favorite of mine when I was ten years old. They did similar stuff in NG and I found it cringe worthy as an adult. I'm sure it has something to do with your age when you view these things.

Isn't it during S2 that Takei was on extended "shore leave" because he was filming The Green Berets? The last time I watched the entire series I really "felt" his absence during that period of S2.

Why wasn't Uhura in "The Doomsday Machine"? That always bugged me.

Yes. It's one reason why Chekov ended up with some nice bits in season two, for instance in Tribbles.

I wouldnt be surprised if there's a book about her adventures abroad. There's some answers over at trekbb:
https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/the-doomsday-machine-wheres-uhura.81195/page-2

"Early versions of the script had her getting her bikini line waxed, with McCoy mentioning that, from what he's seen, it would take a week." -Joe, noted Trek historian

"In my own personal canon, I prefer to believe that she's still on medical leave being retrained after having her memory wiped by Nomad in "The Changeling." "

"We've actually hit this before. "Out of Character", Nichols was not a regular cast member, but a 'day player' - a few steps up from an extra, but not by all that much. This limited the amount of time she could have on screen, due to union rules (which were and are very strict about such things)."

"there were only three regular cast members, Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelly...The only other cast member who was signed as a regular was Grace Lee Whitney..."

All silliness aside I was wondering if she was filming another project, called out sick or something. I know she was a "supporting" cast member, but she appeared in the majority of episodes.

But not enough to type it into google and find a quick answer. So maybe you just mean her absence bothers you, period, no matter what the reason.

Maybe I did and couldn't find a satisfactory answer smart ass. And yes, the only thing lacking about the episode was the absence of Uhura.

I think Joe the Trek Historian presented the most likely explanation with his deleted scene summary.
