Yeah, seems like everyone is entering football withdrawal pretty soon. Although, fortunately, we still have the Tour de France for a couple of weeks. As for the tournament, everyone says this is the best one ever. Well, I don't agree with that. Yes, there have been some great matches, but far too many of them have been all intensity and very little gameplay. Intensity is useless to me unless there's some great creativity, dribbles, technical skills and awesome passes to go with it. It's fine that a lesser opponent will do its best to ruin the general pace and rhythm of the play if that's their tool to get far, but it doesn't allow for very viewerfriendly football. To be fair, I missed the first 4 days because I was attending a film festival. Don't know how much good there was then. While there have been some reds and yellows, it's my impression that this hasn't been the ugliest of cups, foul-wise (excepting a certain hungry Urugayan). But.....people need to do something about the dives and yersey holding. Overall, a reasonably good WC -- completely devoid of ANY Nordic team, btw -- but I'm sure it can be better. See you in Russia in 2018!

So is this thread officially closed today? Perhaps everyone should give their thoughts on the overall tournament!!? When I think of the group stage, I of course think of Team USA getting through the Group of Death along with the eventual world champion, Germany, and that alone makes me proud. I wish things had gone better for Team USA but no one rolled over them and they gave everything they had out on the pitch. As for the matches themselves, I'm not sure there were many legendary contests but who will ever forget Australia matching Mighty Holland goal for goal and Tim Cahill's brilliant goal from the volley? Magnificent. There was Clint Dempsey scoring for Team USA in the 29th second against Ghana, van Persie's epic flying header vs. Spain, there was Spain's epic collapse, there were the surprises of Colombia and Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez, Costa Rica winning the Group of Near Death, England and Italy flaming out in the group stage--Italy for the second World Cup in a row--France bouncing back strong from the debacle of 2010 and becoming quarter finalists, Nigeria's Musa matching the Mighty Messi goal-for-goal in the group match, thread favorite Hulk having a "GREAT" game despite flopping, a home crowd-killing handball, the errant passe leading to Chilean equalizer, and a missed penalty, Greece playing like crap but somehow making it into the Round of 16, Neymar's injury, and of course the most memorable match of World Cup 2014--Brazil 1 Germany 7. I'll always remember where I was as the first five goals scored, that's how memorable that match was for me. I hope the enthusiasm for football here in the US continues to grow. I work in Miami so I experience what I hope is a prelude to come, as most everyone in that county loves the game, we have so many people here from Latin America and their passion for the game is partly what led me to become a footie obsessive, though my own love for this sport has been a long time in the making. I'll no doubt have a lot more to say about the final itself as I reflect more on it. However, thanks to everyone who made this last month-plus so much fun, particularly the thread barflies: BillCarson, Tall Guy, Thomas, Kev McGann, Graham Watt, Francis, Stefancos, GustavoJoseph, and Thor; who's misplaced love for Hulk led to a new catchphrase..."Thread Favorite Hulk." Love truly is blind. lol It's often difficult to sustain decent conversation around this slow olde boarde but this along with the two footie threads have been great. If this forum is still around over the next few years, there are two Copa Americas, and a EURO 2016 to talk about. Please continue the discussion! Just keep in mind that the cleaning lady is here and waiting for the rest of you to clear on out. I'm sure there's a Star Wars thread waiting to take this one's spot at the top of the Non-Film Score Discussion Board.

In another weird decision by FIFA, Messi is made best player of the tournament. Why not give it to Suarez instead?

I will think on a few days before giving my review. Im a bit footballed out and tournament could have finished a week ago for me. Englands group seems like it was a 100 years ago. Not the worst - certainly streets ahead of 2010 and the bloody adidas jublabanio - but not quite the best. Pleased to know im a barfly. Never been one of them before.

I don't know about you guys, but I had a blast with this World Cup, I never been at one before, and highly recommend it; I went to 2 games here in São Paulo (Holland vs Chile and Korea vs Belgium) and the atmosphere was amazing. Brasil lived all the possible situation in the history of World Cups, and we had a new level of humilliation. That traumatic result was more than deserved for a very outdated CBF that breathes much more marketing than soccer, and the general feeling is to stop with the arrogance, train hard from scratch and return with a vengeance in Russia 2018! Beware, we'll be back! As for Messi being the best player of this Cup, I just have to insist that Robben was Robbed.

You could probably make a case for schweinsteiger and muller too. Yeah thanks to jim for being the glue that kept us all together. And yeah good to get a more accurate street view from gustavo given the one sided brasilian fervour shown on tv. Whatever game theyre covering Tv crews always prefer the slightly mad partisan nutters who scream up at the camera as opposed to the measured guys who shrug and say Well lets be real, our team are crap and we will probably lose. And thomas this is the only thread with the football one where any regular humour and entertainment happens. Certainly nfsd threads are slightly more sane than most over on general. So few threads there - maybe one in 20 - now get even a skim read from me. I still think we need a films of the 60s 70s forum!! West ham sign Enner Valencia!! What did you guys think of him?
