"Hey - I've just seen this! You're clearly unaware that football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans (as opposed to rugby, which is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen)."
-------------------------------
I think that old saying is well past it's sell-by date.
It's now...football is a game played by cheats and rapists and rugby is a game played by toffs, drunks and idiots.

And we haven't even started yet about the ones who watch it. wink

Looks like Wolverhampton are dialing it in as they circle the drain to relegation. It would also appear that Blackburn will join them in the second league next season.

BTW, Leeds United are currently 14th in the English Championship. So no promotion for yet another year.

I love the concept of relegation, as it keeps the crap teams from stinking up the pristine, free-from-hooliganism and official incompetence for at least one year. big grin

Is this Tall Guy's four-year-old son posting? The Tall Guy that I admire and respect and who swills Newcastle Brown and has a delusional love of Morricone would certainly understand the concept of sarcasm.

Come on you, pukes! Let's get this thread going! Even the friggin' Snooker topic has more posts than this!

Snooker's grrreat! And I can't help it - every time I open the thread, I see the words "slay Leeds United" and the blue devils take over...

Today's the most important day in the English football calendar - FA Cup Final day. It should start with It's A Knockout, followed by a 3pm kick off between two teams with the local butcher and perhaps a paint company owner as the chairmen, with players called Hunter and Styles and Yeats kicking the stuffing out of each other towards a dull 1 - 0 win. Not a 5.15 kick off between teams owned by foreign oligarchs with players called Drogba, Skertl, Cech and Reina. OK, the last ten minutes were quite exciting, thanks to a good old donkey of an English centre-forward coming on and muscling the fancy dans out of the way, but each cup final day just gets more depressing.

Jim, I apologise for missing the sarcasm - but never underestimate the support I'll give my crap team! My boss knows that if he wants to get me on a hook and reeled in, all he has to do is mention "Dirty Leeds" - and I fall for it every time. x

It was a pretty crap final, unless you're a Chelsea fan.
I really love their variety of songs and chants (Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea, Chealseeeee!!) frown
Liverpool didn't show-up for the first hour, found themselves (deservedly) 2-0 down and only once Carroll had been introduced did they manage to stir into life. He was the only one I felt sorry for, HE didn't deserve to be on the losing side.
I'm not that bothered about the 'goal that wasn't' because it was impossible to tell if the whole ball crossed the line (brilliant save btw) so if in doubt, rule it out!
Stuart Downing is shite and Jordan Henderson (I don't care if he's still only 12) is not good enough. I feared the worst when I saw the teams! With those two in the team, LFC are always gonna be up against it.
Hopefully they will make more of a shape next season but I'm not holding my breath.
My two final hopes for this season are Man City to win the league and Newcastle to bag a place in next years Champions League (obviously I'm gonna become very Germanic for the CL Final wink
Oh, and John Williams to write a piece called 'Fanfare For Anfield Soccer Stadium' wink

Jeez, you make yourself sound like "The Mancunian Candidate."

A reminder of what happened to Chelsea the last time they appeared in the UEFA final:

...and a reminder of how we wuz robbed when Leeds were in the European Cup final.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-zB6xIx3qg

In short, at least one stone cold penalty denied, a perfectly good goal ruled out for an offside that no Bayern player appealed for, and then two second half sucker punches from the great Gerhard Mueller, followed by much disenchantment on the part of the Leeds fans.

Was the referee bribed? Wouldn't be the first time...

I'm glad to learn you've finally let go of that disappointment from 1975, TG!

I still burn inside from 1970, 1973, 1973 again and 1975. If I were a bit older, I'd also burn inside from 1965. Fortunately, in my lifetime, my team has won the league three times, the FA Cup and the League Cup and two European trophies.

Could have been much more, but it's still more than most can say (not you, McGann!)

Gah! Blackburn loses to Wigan and is now officially doomed to relegation! Poor Steve Kean...Wigan, after spending much of the season rock bottom, lives to play with the big dogs another day.

Chelsea gets thumped by Liverpool, 4-1. Further damaging their UEFA hopes for next season. They'd better cash in this year, then.

I would give Bayern slightly better odds for taking the CL this year. But of course I was sure Barcelona would walk all over Chelsea too...

As for the Premiership this season. Really no one to root for.
Normally I'd love to see the underdog take the price instead of Man U. But City is suck a bloated, extravagant mess filled with egocentric, unprofessional players.

Ballotelli should be working in a circus!

Blackburn have been doomed for ages. Absent owners who know nothing about football and a deluded puppet manager....they may as well have played with this little fella up front.

Believe it or not, I find the English Championship League more interesting. Are those games carried on SKY or some other channel in the UK and Europe? There's nothing like seeing humbled former Premier League teams scuffling for (sometimes decades) and trying to get back to into prime time. Unfortunately, my access to mot football is limited, as I don't have cable, live in the US, where the sport is gaining popularity but still well behind American Football, Basketball (blechh!), and baseball.

I realize the final's being played in Munich, but Manchester had the final practically in their back yard and it didn't do them much good (I tend to blame those almost never-worn black, red, and white unis).

Barring any kooky mishaps tomorrow, it looks like Manchester City will win its first league title since 1967.

Hey Jim, take that Terry Henry fella out of the thread title and call it something like LET'S TALK FOOTY and you might (hopefully) get lots more hits!
I certainly enjoy reading the posts in this one! smile
