There were so many daft bits which i thought Oh Thats cock.

1 was in the first raid they got out cars with baseball bats screaming Armed police!! At robbers with machine guns.!!

2 was during the individual chase of carter along a gangway he chucked his only weapon - a baseball bat - at the villain he was pursuing from about 10 yards - missed - giving away his only weapon. Seriously who in their right mind gets rid of their weapon like that.?? No one. Okay if you are right behind someone and you wanted to bring them down you might chuck it at them but from three yards not 10 - 13 yards, its just dumb and not the sort of thing a policeman would do.

3 was when carter corners the villain hes chasing who pulls a knife and winstone punches through a plasterboard wall with two arms and grabs the guy by the throat. Nonsense.

4 the worst was after smashing up a deserted caravan site - not a soul about, as someone pointed out - not even a dogwalker. They crash and regan walks up to the car with the main villain in, who moments before had a machine gun, and is sitting there dazed with a cut head. Winstone says something like Youre nicked!! - but without taking the machine gun, he walks away. Like any cop would leave an armed robber sitting in a car not knowing if he was gona sit up and shoot him. Utter bollocks all round.

Double post so maybe i better think of some more holes.

Thing is you might expect daftness like this in transporter 5 but in allegedly a gritty street actioner, its pants.
As with miami vice, they woulda been better off giving them different names, a new title and just making it a nonsense cop gangster chase actioner. Any relation to the sweeney is cash-in name only.

Having just watched this ... I'm surprised to find that I quite enjoyed it. That's my way of saying it wasn't half as bad as I'd expected and it kept me watching to the end.

I don't know whether it would have made it a more enjoyable film if I'd understood more of the dialogue (i.e. the words the cast uttered between the profanities) but being a Brummie it was like watching a foreign film ... understanding the gist without the detail.

I was a casual viewer of the TV series (I probably saw more than I missed) and I can appreciate how the filmmakers were attempting to make a big-screen version ... recall: the original Sweeney! (1977) had little to do with the TV series ... but it went far too OTT in seeking to out-gun the US competition: any similarity with Lethal Weapon II ended when the cameras started to roll.

It might be fun to watch it again with English subtitles, maybe some kind of drinking game - a shot for every time you hear/see the F word. It'd be hell the next morning, but at least you'd lose consciousness ten minutes into the film!

Oh, I think the director was going through his blue period. Perhaps he felt it would affect the realism if he used natural colours ...

Highly unlikely, Bill ... I don't agree with anyone when it comes to JB007. As soon as I hear/read someone's views I find an opposing view engulfs me and I have to make it known ... smile

Sorry if my less than 100% dislike of The Sweeney offended you - not my intention.

But as you mentioned Bond ... I recall hearing Broccoli say, many times, that (I paraphrase) with JB007 he wanted the audience to see the money on the screen. I always struggled to understand that but it may have been one of the reasons there were such money disputes with Sean Connery and on-going fee negotiations with Roger Moore.

Jump forward to Skyfall - a film with some similarities to The Sweeney - and I wonder where the majority of the $200m went ... it certainly wasn't on the screen.

And yet, The Sweeney cost £3m ... now I'm not suggesting it was money well spent but £/$ per viewing pleasure I do think this film is better value than Skyfall.

I expected a lot from Skyfall and got little - I expected virtually nothing from The Sweeney and was mildly entertained.

(Figures per IMDb)

So long as you don't ask me to count the number of times ... I can't count that high!

I haven't kept a copy - it was deleted the moment it ended.

Yes, at one time if they wanted it to look "realistic" they'd film it in b/w. These days it's shades of blue. If they want to see what realistic looks like, maybe they should just look out if the window!
