A DVD does not have high definition resolution.

Then why do the studios bother to release films
remastered in high definition on DVD?

And why would electronics manufacturers bother
producing "upscale-to-high-definition" DVD players?

Den

To sell to the dvd market who does not have a BR player before releasing it on BR.

and to answer your 2nd question, a dvd player can produce a better resolution on an upscaling dvd or BR player but it doesnt give you the true HD found on blu-ray.

so enjoy an upscaled dvd of S+D - I'll wait .

I think a lot of people will wait. A lot of lovers of old movies are well into Blu-ray now (no more DVD's from Twilight Time), but it's nearly three months away. I just think the press release has made a mistake, it happends all the time. This has been a great year for vintage movies on Blu-ray, better than last year (which was also very good) & I expect next year to be even better.

DVDS look good enough, imo. I've seen comparisons between
several DVDs and their Blu-Ray counterparts. I couldn't tell any
difference in picture quality. But then, I only watch old movies.

A lot more fun than The Ten Commandments. I think the deal with Warner releasing Paramount Blu-rays is why Paramount released this in DVD only. I'm sure Warner will give them a couple of months to sell a few DVD's & then announce a Blu-ray release. I'll wait, I've waited this long.

Unfortunately , not this year - with Easter only two weeks away, it would have been announced long before now.

I shouldn't think they're that bothered about Easter, it's not really an Easter film. I do expect a Blu-ray some time this year. I'll wait, soundtrack fans are good at waiting smile

Except that Walmart lumped it with all their Biblical Epics for sale for the Easter Holiday - BEN HUR , TEN COMMANDMENTS , ETC - oh and at my local WM, all copies of the dvd sold out .

I think that Paramount is either very greedy or stupid not to have issued the Blu-Ray at the same time. But I'm waiting, too.

I dunno, but I'm not sure if Paramount can release its films on Blu-ray anymore. I think they did some sort of Blu-ray distribution with Warner, so my thinking is they're selling as many DVD units as they can before the Blu is released. I don't know what Parmount have been doing, I mean Universal seems to own a lot of their back catalogue now (like the "Road To" movies).

Last year they released on BR SUNSET BOULEVARD which was filmed at the same time as SAMSON AND DELILAH. Other Paramount releases include WINGS + BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S last year. Some films have been released through Olive like both DeMille THE BUCCANEER films but neither are as high profile as SAMSON AND DELILAH is (or was).

Yea they still own Samson & Delilah, but Universal now owns DeMille's previous film, Unconquered (1947), & there a great looking DVD from Universal. Whatever, I want great looking Blu's of: Unconquered, Samson & Delilah & The Greatest Show On Earth. Hardly high art, but a lot of (colourful) fun!

Absolutely agree! The Technicolor in these DeMille films just blow away what we have today.

Sky TV in the UK has shown "Samson & Delilah" recently but it's one of the minority of films which they've only shown in standard definition, which suggests that Paramount may not have a High Definition master.

Oh I dunno, Sky have been showing the same old crappy transfer for yonks. There is just no way that Paramount would have restored this in SD only, just no way. No one works in SD now, go into any facilities company these days & the few SD machines they have are gathering dust in a corner.

A Blu-ray release in Japan has been announced for September -- wonder when a US release will happen?

I'll betcha' Warners has been working on this (like they did on SHANE), and we'll have a Blu-ray in the Fall or Winter.

There aren't many old, old films like this which have enough audience interest today to sustain a big sales plan, but this one might do it for Warners, at least in a limited way.

Maybe they'll even get Angela Lansbury to promote it around the talk shows. She's the only one left of the 4 principal performers, AND she can tell great tales of Cecil's foot fetish. smile

Amazon.de has the Blu-ray being released in Germany on 4th October, the same date as they release the blu's of, War & Peace '56 & Hatari '62. Maybe they'll be released in America around that date, but you never know these days.

I hope that you are right, manderley - can I hope for a few extras ? so many possibilities -like an isolated music + effects track - there is one on the laserdisc !

If they persuade Angela to promote it, they should also get Russ Tamlyn who plays the future King Saul - Im sure that he has some good memories to share about making this epic!
